The really hilarious part about that is that no one outside the Star Trek fandom cares. No one. It’s like “brony” versus “pegasister” versus “MLP fan”. No one outside the fandom cares. At all. XP
 
I have no idea what “Trekker” was coined to differentiate from “Trekkies” somehow, but in mind I kinda just lump them all together.

From what I heard, they’ve always been Trekkies, so it’s just trying to make a change that’s more painful for everyone.

It’s a fake demarcation people make to separate themselves from a certain section of a fandom they feel they’re somehow too good for.
 
If we someday have Poners or FIM-Enthusiasts or something it will be very similar.

My mom explained the difference between Trekkies and Trekkers: Trekkies are geeks who know how to speak Klingon and cosplay frequently, while Trekkers are just normal people who happen to like and talk about Star Trek. This may just be her interpretation, mind you. I haven’t really researched it myself.

Sidenote: Fandoms will always be fun but silly places. My mom has been a “Trekkie” for pretty much all of her teen years and adult life. She has always loved Star Trek. Recently she made a post on her facebook and was flooded with people fighting over whether or not to be called Trekkies or Trekkers out of fear of being associated with one group or another or being portrayed in some light they might not like.

They are often. Unless it’s on Derpibooru in which case there is much snarkiness.

I’ve been dropping some semi-hidden pony references on my video descriptions every now and then (e.g. explaining how a persistent minotaur boss in Battletoads and Double Dragon has a “will of iron”), but otherwise I try to refrain from that stuff.

Things to do to piss off a brony: Have a different opinion than they do on pony.

a lot are overly self conscious, insecure, and on a hair trigger and will easily freak out if they think they’re being threatened in any way

Not even that. In one Game Grumps episode, Arin explained about some kind of toys being sold in McDonalds and basically said “Yeah they were selling Transformers and My Little Pony.” They didn’t go any further. The comments section still burns to this day.

Yeah, it’s not bad on Derpibooru. It’s mainly only bad on YT or on EQD. Of course, now I don’t read youtube comments thanks to HERP DERP so… I wouldn’t know too much about that anymore.
