Sounds like it wasn’t meant to be.
Their biggest sponsors dropped out inexplicably, and they failed hardcore when they tried crowd-sourcing for funds to kickstart the next con (didn’t help that this was right after the fiasco that was the Los Pegasus Unicon). Details about what went down on the administrative level after the original con and how they tried reorganizing are few and far between, so I can’t even begin to guess as to why the whole thing fell to pieces. It’s pretty sad, because Canterlot Gardens had loads of potential to grow into a truly formidable Midwest pony convention.
So what happened to the sequel?
The con itself was a ton of fun and a huge success, but there was a ton of behind-the-scenes drama. Mainly involving Purple Tinker, who if I recall correctly accused the con heads of “stealing” money from her con (Bronycon at the time) and starting that one as a way to “spite” her and “steal” away people from the Midwest who might otherwise have no other choice than going to the East Coast if they wanted to attend a pony convention.
Wasn’t that con dead and drama-filled before it even hit the ground running? From what I remember reading, it sounded awful. Like, as far as con-organizers go aren’t the people that put on CG regarded as some of the worst?
Other people would be shocked that I’ve never been to it despite living in Columbus for the past 5 years.
