This season has been helping with that, too. Fancypants seemed to talk to him like someone who knew him back in the day, Spike hangs out with Big Mac while the Mane Six are adventuring, he apparently knows Hoity Toity, though that’s admittedly much earlier in the series, and he talks with Donut Joe. Spike definitely got a life of his own.

I like to think that Spike has an entire separate life among friends he made growing up in Canterlot with Twilight. Being a baby dragon and living in the royal court would’ve made him a local celebrity.
