Description

There is argument about IDW comic not being canon as age difference. We see in cutie mark chronicles same “age difference” showed in IDW comic. Just to point that out

A good non-pony example of this is Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness. Everything is resolved and the characters are fine with each other at the end of the episode…only for the next one to come along and hit the reset button, bringing everything back to square bucking one again!

Background information, like on the toys, do not provide a story, but merely a setting. Stories require more than that.

If the storybooks do not assume that the readers knowledge of the show, and the events of the show did not happen in them, then they are their own primary medium. Similarly, the show is it’s own primary medium. In comparison, the comics are a secondary medium as the events of the show explicitly happened in their continuity as mentioned and shown in the comics, and are referred to such by Hasbro and its writers.

the toys have a background story written on the back of the packaging.
yes, it’s rubbish, but arbitrarily stating that only the “primary medium” is just as unfounded. Besides, the MLP:FiM picturebook was released on the same day as the first airing of the show. Look it up at mlp dot wikia dot com/wiki/List_of_storybooks
How do you decide what is primary? Maybe the picturebooks are the One True Canon then?

The toys don’t have a story, and thus are not the primary medium when defining the canon. The show is the primary medium that has a story, and thus defines the canon.

The basis that one rejects the comics as canon is that there’s a combination of the facts that they’re not part of the primary medium, they’re not written by the same writers concurrent with the primary medium, the writers of the primary medium have not said that the events in them happened, and the writers of the primary medium have said that they do not take the events, characters, or settings in said comics into account whatsoever when they create material for the primary medium. It’s no different than Star Wars, where the movies and the newer Clone Wars series are canon, and nothing else, or countless manga, whose anime adaptations and movies are not canon.

Plus, you’re overgeneralizing. There’s a difference between small background elements being incongruent, like duplicate background ponies or Minuette being an adult in that season 1 flashback, and significant events or focus characters being incongruent. The former affects nothing, while the latter significantly affects the integrity of the plot. It’s not proof by itself that the comics aren’t canon, but it’s evidence that the events in them are impossible to have happened in the show’s timeline of events.

This comic came out before season 4, and was put up for pre-order at least as far back as May 15, 2012. That’s a month after A Canterlot Wedding aired.

The background ponies were literally “background ponies” in earlier seasons. This comic was made using the material available at the time, and isn’t any more wrong than those early episodes. Everything gets an equal dose of retcon.

“It doesn’t need to be 100% correct for there to be a canon”
That is precisely what the anti-comic people are saying. comics only 99.9% correct, therefore comics not canon. destrooooy

and the reason why BG characters are so incomprehensible is, as Larson has said, there is no such thing as a background CHARACTER. They aren’t characters, they are filler, no identities, no personalities, no character. The artists just put in what they think is pretty. In scripts the speaking BG ponies aren’t even named, it’s pony1 pony2, and whatever pony template is used changes from episode to episode.

So either go the purist way, demanding that canon must be 100% correct and accept that with the way MLP is made it is impossible to have canonicity. (also applies to almost any other fiction, including Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, etc)
Or, accept that slight “errors” are impossible to avoid and ignore the varying age differences and other minor oddities. This implies there is no basis to reject the comics or movies as canon.
In short, either everything is canon or nothing is. There truly is no other way without making up irrelevant rules which have nothing to do with canonicity.
