This is not the iron cross, this is the Wehrmacht’s insignia in WW2, this design is more specifically used for the Luftwaffe, the German airforce of the time.

Also in point of fact, the German Air Force hated the Nazis. One of the pilots even escorted a crippled US bomber to safety by using his own ship as a shield, based on their battlefield code of honor and basic human decency. The German pilot took pity on the 19 or 20 or so year old US pilot and decided not to shoot him out of the sky, despite wanting revenge for losing his brother in the war:
