I know some people take it personally if you say the comics aren’t canon, but face it, the show isn’t being written as if the comics happened. NMM has been mentioned again many times, most recently about this time yesterday. It has never ever ever been treated as anything other than her mistake and her greatest regret. She once retook that form just to entertain kids at pony Halloween.
 
I think when show and comic directly contradict, you gotta take the show, at least when talking about the show.

To be honest, I at first thought this episode was going to show us insight about how Nightmare Moon her self operated. I almost blurted out about IDW canon and stuff during the first 5 minutes or so…  
But by the end of the episode I was pretty confident that the canon presented in yesterday’s episode did not contradict the canon presented in IDW’s Nightmare Rarity story.

Well that was Nightmare Moon, not Luna herself.

I’m surprised you can touch it at all. I always thought you’d either go right through or get zapped. Watched first episode recently and pretty much all her magic was done with her hair. She didn’t even teleport the way Twi does, she’d turn into the same stuff as her hair and float somewhere else in that form.

Well I guess this confirms that Luna’s mane (and probably Celestia’s too) are tangible solid touchable magical ethereal looking hair.
