It’s very hard to separate something that old, with a duty that big, not being more powerful than most things, no matter how much evidence says otherwise.

I’ve always wondered where all of Celestia’s “godly” hype comes from. I’m actually curious because I’ve never seen it. Sure she rises the sun, but its pretty much spelled out that the whole “moving celestial bodies” thing is her cutiemark specific talent, and not because her raw magic is actually strong enough to move anything that big. If it was, then nothing would stop her…and she’s been stopped many times. Even Twilight herself said that no one could create a barrier as strong/big as Shining Armor’s, which is understandable because the shield obviously means “protection” is his cutiemark specific spell, but that doesn’t make him magically stronger than the princesses.
 
Then everything else from Celestia is her obviously being superior to any unicorn, but nowhere near the godly level the fanbase apparently loves to think she is. Even though I’m pretty sure early on Lauren herself said Celestia was in no way a god or close to it. To me, its obvious she and Luna are basically winged unicorns with stronger magic (but not overwhelmingly more, like some think) who also have very long lives to master several more spells than a unicorn normally could. And since she’s also normally incapable of facing and/or beating the weekly supernatural threat w/o the Mane6/elements/rainbow, I really do wonder where all the hype comes from.
 
Don’t misunderstand, I do like Celestia. I love her mentor and motherly role in the story, I just wonder why the fanbase seems to be so enamored with the idea that she’s so strong and almighty. From what we’ve seen of them in combat, I doubt a single alicorn could beat a strong giant monster (hydra, dragon, ursa, etc) alone.

I don’t really know. I’d say he sees Celestia as a mother figure, but there’s also Twilight in that equation. I wouldn’t say he knows Luna very well, though.
