I remember a lot of ridicule and eyerolling, and some hatred, directed at that particular crack ship; I don’t recall hatred directed at Comet Tail himself. Are there any Cometabuse pics archived here or anything of the sort?

I feel like links should not require quotation marks in order to become clickable and that it should be optional.
He has exactly two toys, maybe three if you count 2 EQG doll versions.
But seriously, people who use “BUT TOYS” as an excuse for anything should do some research first. I think Mrs and Mr Cake have more toys than Flash Sentry does. I think Sunset Shimmer has 4x the amount of Toys Flash does, who just has 2 EQG dolls and a blind bag. That’s it. The Blind Bag isn’t even a new mold for him either.
I’d love to see a brushable or Fashion Style toy of him, but there is none.

Linking in comments is overly complex if you ask me. You have to use a special syntax for them to become clickable.
Here’s a good example of Flash in a story that doesn’t involve romance with Twilight, too (I wish we could edit posts). It’s a comedy, so the character development isn’t super deep, but he’s likable and fun to read.

Realize that what you like does not directly correlate with how good a portrayal is.

You’ll have to link me to those fanfics, because I don’t remember ever seeing him in a way that I liked.
Flash is no more immune to being built upon than any other minor character in the show. Just because so many people are unwilling to build on him doesn’t mean it can’t be done.
I’ve seen lots of fics where Flash is a great character, with him being taken many different directions.
I don’t know about virtually no hatred. Actually, I highly doubt that he wouldn’t be hated simply because he would be a male character shipped with Twilight. Don’t you remember the Comet Tail drama?
Well, yeah. That’s how characters like Vinyl Scratch and Lyra took off. This is entire show is about inspiring creativity; just look at how much fanart and fanfictions it has produced in only four years. Fans of the show love taking characters and making them into something. Flash…can’t be made into anything. He can’t be molded. He can’t be changed. He’s just there. And he’s a detriment to the fandom’s natural flow of creativity.
He’s just kind of there.
And get virtually no hatred, to boot.

This, exactly. He’s still enough of a blank slate to make Hasbro’s toy division happy, though.

I still like him.
I think there’s a lot of truth in that. Characters who have only passing roles are a blank slate for fans to bestow a personality and make their own. Flash is just established enough to deny writers and artists wiggle room, but not diverse enough to hold the audience’s attention.
That’s right, if Flash had LESS of a personality fans would probably ship her with him MORE.
