I agree with you about the bubble shield and/or teleportation part. However the situation with Starlight was different. If we keep up the ‘horse-behavior’ argument, Starlight was more like a rival than a predator. Horses/ponies do fight with one another. Though Twilight still made a mistake by loading her firepower rather than taking immediate action. Besides she should have teleported her and her friends away for safety in the first place anyway…

She did teleport them a few feet but I’m sure she’s capable of teleporting them completely away and the bubble shield would have been perfect in this situation.
 
Fight or flight is a good example but remember when starlight glimmer attacked with her followers in the cave and everyone was scared it took Twi less than a second to enter fight mode and attempt to incapacitate her.

You know things are really terrifying when even the brave ponies like Applejack, Rainbow Dash and Twilight are shitting themselves. Though as I recall in Castle-Mania, RD and AJ often pretend to be tougher than they truly are.

I’m not sure if we’re on the same page, but didn’t she eventually teleport everyone away when they were stuck in the spider web? Part of me agrees on Twilight being able to defend everyone, however it might simply has something to do with being a pony. Ponies/horses are flight animals and therefore chose to flee first from predators rather than to fight. Most often, whenever Twilight is confronted with a dangerous situation, she would first try to run away. However when given no other choice (usually when her boundaries are pushed, like hurting loved ones or wrecking objects important to her) she will fight back.
