Regardless, in the fan circles I was in at the time I didn’t see much drama over S2 personally, besides “Mare Do-Well,” Derpygate, Faust announcing her leave, and just before the wedding episode. Compared to the drama/controversies we got later, they weren’t as bad.
 
Season 1 wasn’t perfect, and had some minor dramas too. Heck, I remember back when some fans were claiming the CMC were “ruining” the show, how “Feeling Pinkie-Keen” triggered many die-hard-atheists, and an episode reviewer on DA, stated he refuses to consider “Cutie-Mark Chronicles” as canon.

You’re correct about Twilicorn being a far bigger controversy than anything in season 2, and I’d argue that Twilicorn is the biggest controversy within the fandom, with the original Equestria Girls in a close second _{(Glimmer’s reformation is in between season 2 controversies and Twilicorn fwiw)}. My point still remains: at the time of airing season 2 was quite controversial due to the perceived drop in quality and what were felt to be outright bad episodes. It’s due to how big the Twilicorn controversy was that most people forget this, or at least try to justify why season 2 wasn’t as bad as they originally said it was.
 
It reminds me a lot of the Mass Effect 3 ending controversy, where because of the size of the controversy, people forgot about the controversies in the rest of Mass Effect 3 (Tali’s face reveal, anyone?) or Mass Effect 2.
 
People may downplay the controversies from season 2 now, but they were definitely there. It’s funny, because like season 3, season 5 also had a highly controversial ending, yet it’s now considered one of the better seasons (a view that I ironically agree with).

Yeah, though as stated it’s ironic, because before that when the comics first came out, fans hailed them as “better then the show,” (or at least S3) and some bronies turned to them, and stated they’d stop watching the show. Then when the comics didn’t go the way they wanted, suddenly the comics were “bad,” and the show was “good” again. Nowadays, I hardly see any bronies that like the comics, even the “Transformers” crossover is barely getting any regard from bronies surprisingly.
 
Though, the comic drama was after Season 3, (and maybe 4) and is a whole different drama.

I still remember how Desperate some people got for the comics to be non Canon. And before the show actually went against one of the big stories it Was very clear it was just because they didn’t like them

Yeah, it didn’t take long for them to turn against those. Though, the controversial “Reflections” arc, and such didn’t help either.
 
The Season 3 era had so much drama (that I pointed out in my last post) I actually thought the brony fandom was going to end, and that Season 4 was going to be hated too. Luckily I was wrong.

I’ve remembered people complaining when the controversial things ended up in the comics. Cadence,shining armor, Princess twilight and the reformed changelings. Still waiting for their toys

I dunno, I remember during all the Season 3 drama, (besides Twilicorn, had stuff like show creator Faust’s leave, post-Derpygate “Where’s Derpy?” drama, “Spike’s treatment,” Rarity not getting an episode, Discord being reformed, Babs Seed, Equestria Girls, the “Molestia” fan-blog drama, fear of the show being cancelled after 60 episodes, and such) Season 2 & 1 were being hailed as much better then S3, (heck, when the comics started, fans hailed them as better then the show) so it was still considered a good season by most fans, aside from some of those things you mentioned. Season 2 was nowhere near as divisive as S3, which even today is one of the least popular, and most controversial seasons.

After season 2 for the most part, you’re right…though quite a few Faustists still considered it non-canon. Nowadays it’s firmly in the good camp, with the rest of seasons 1-5, even including 6 now.
 
At the time however there were vicious disagreements about the quality of the season, which started with Lesson Zero, and especially after MMDW. Anything written by Merryweather Williams caused a heap of trepidation within the fandom, and even season 1 holdover writers were felt to have dropped the ball slightly.
 
The lead up to A Canterlot Wedding after we found out that *gasp!* they were adding another alicorn to the show caused the first major dividing line in the fandom, with the Faust purists like Chad Rocco declaring that the show is now complete crap, and left the fandom/stopped watching. After it turned out to be a great episode (or at least better than what people feared), the season wasn’t seen in such a negative light. It wasn’t until season 4 or even 5 was airing that season 2 was felt to definitely be in the good seasons category.
 
Hell, when the season that the above picture is from, people were still bashing Twilicorn and saying how the show is now “The Twilight Sparkle and Friends” show.

From what I remember everyone loved Season 2 though some fans hated “Mare Do-Well,” and fans had doubts about the upcoming “wedding” episode. Some fans were also divided on Derpy speaking/being officially named leading into the “Derpygate” incident.

It’s EFFing wild reading back through this thread knowing that the majority of people now put season 5 in the “good seasons” category. It honestly makes me wish that there was a archive of Ponibooru that still had all the comments, so we could go back and see what people really thought of season 2 at the time of airing, instead of being washed up in nostalgia…

I’ve seen a few, but for the most part practically every brony accepted it.
 
Originally they were going to use her original hair, and there are a few brief animation mistakes where her original hair clips through, like when she says, “HUZZAH!”

In the earlier days, the fandom was more open-minded, I was even surprised the fandom accepted Luna’s new hair style in Season 2, and such.
 
Nowadays, anything new is met with controversy.
