No, I think Daneasaur is just remembering wrong. Like I said (and linked) there’s a Faust quote where she says anywhere from 12-17 in terms of maturity.
@Fwelin
@Fwelin
those are their real ages huh? well, good riddance to Lauren Faust’s vision of the show then.
Twiligh almost flew into a helicopter in Testing Testing 1-2-3, Rainbow traveled through an air conditioning vent in Tanks for the Memories (and I think you can see a vent in Wonderbolts Academy, too), and we see a businesspony next to a rotary telephone in Rarity Takes Manehattan.
I got no idea on telephones, but air conditioning (the stupid contraption that was in Just for sidekicks) and helicopter (Tank’s flying device that apparently has a magic powered motor).
@Background Pony #6E3B
I’m certain it was in relation to someone asking “So does this take place in a post apocalypse Earth?” and it was a simple comment in response, something like “Nope, modern Earth.” it was short and to the point.
Yeah, I’ve never heard of this being said.
The first source link I posted below (the derpibooru screenshot) is from Faust’s dA. Maybe you were actually thinking of that and misremembered?
@Fwelin
Remind me, where do we see telephones and air conditioning? And helicopters - Are you just referring to “Pinkie’s crazy contraption” from Griffon the Brush Off?
Ima have to ask for a source on that
Actually FiM was said to BE in modern times and that they are on Earth (a parallel Earth on the same time as our earth) just with magic “stunting” technology.
Anyway, there was a questioning, most likely on DA, as to the age of the ponies. While no specifics were given, Lauren stated that the ponies were all “in their early twenties”, with the only age difference we know being that Fluttershy is one year older than pinkie pie and that Rarity is most likely the eldest of the bunch, what with such an experience in her job, even if half her home was converted into it.
Add to it that twilight was most likely 5-6 when Spike hatched, that puts him around 15 years old when the series starts, which fits more with his mentality and ability to deal with responsibilities, albeit in an inexperienced manner. It also, as much as I don’t like bringing the episode up, fits into the age range where teens are prone to having “identity crisis” and trying to figure out “who they are”.
Regardless, none of the Mane 6 are in school of any sort, meaning they graduated and have moved on, so if they have any sort of school system similar to our own and they were 12-17, it means they would still be in it, unless Twilight was an exception due to Celestia, and the other 5 were dropouts.
Equestria might have originally been envisioned as medieval, it’s sure as heck not now. They have modern style sports stadiums, electric lights, powered trains, helicopters, dams, telephones, giant industrial buildings, modern hospitals, air conditioning, modern toilets, modern telescopes, skyscrapers, and more. At this point, it’s the older technology (like the horse drawn cabs in Manehattan) that are anachronistic, not the modern amenities.
In addition, maturity by age can only be judged by comparing it to the average, since there’s no magical maturity someone has due to biology. You might have been allowed to do things like that, but the average 8 year old in the modern world isn’t. If one labels maturity by age, then it has to refer to the average maturity of that age bracket in the user’s culture.
Finally, Spike is pretty evidently more mature than the CMC, and if you use show evidence for standardized filly and colt sizes, Spike > CMC > Mane 6 (CMC flashback) > 5 year old Sweetie Belle. Three years (if Spike is 8) is a miniscule amount of room to fit all of those in.
You’re not taking into account that Equestria is pretty much medieval in development (aside from a few anachronistic things appearing here and there, plus magic). It’s actually not that far off to say a 16-17-y-o could run their own shops or be in charge of a library in a mostly medieval setting.
Also while Spike is mature for a 8-y-o, that says more about the average 8-y-o than about him. When I was 8-9 I did most the stuff he does that you mentioned: petsitting, allowed to spend his pocket money on stuff he wants, take public transport alone, etc. As for the brazier thing, well, he was the only friendly dragon nearby and how cool it is to have the Equestria Games fire lit by a dragon? And in most cases the CMC act as if they were 6.
While I’ve seen that tweet by Faust, IMO it doesn’t make much sense from what we’ve seen in the show.
Twilight ran a library, organizes massive functions, and takes care of Spike, Rarity owns her own business, Applejack runs part of a farm and basically mothers Apple Bloom, Rainbow Dash has a managerial level position over a whole town, and even disregarding when a crisis happens and they step up on their own, they get tasked with things like driving the dragon in Dragonshy off, and saving the Crystal Empire. They keep up with their duties pretty damn well 99% of the time, too. That’s way too much responsibility to make 12-17 believable, IMO.
Spike seems way more responsible than 8, too. He takes the train to and from Canterlot alone, has the run of the town unsupervised, makes his own purchases, and is given responsibilities like pet sitting, taking care of the library when Twilight is gone, and lighting the Equestria Games brazier. He’s also pretty obviously more mature than the CMCs, too.
Personally, I’d peg the mane 6 at 20ish, and Spike at 13ish.
Here we go, got the sources:

Oh, source? I’ve seen a Faust tweet (probably through this very site) where she said they were anywhere from 12-17 maturitywise… And a separate one where someone was asking if Spike was the equivalent of elementary school, middle school, etc. and she replied elementary and said he was 8 years old maturitywise.
Edited because: Rule #7
I’m disappointed he wasnt
She doesn’t have to have a long face in this world. Though she is kind of lacking in eyeliner…
Otherwise, she looks much closer to her counterpart than Celestia and Luna.
@Vinylshadow
I don’t know what you’re talking about, she is beautiful
Oh gods yes…those lips are absolutely terrifying…
FrancisShining Armor would be able to marry Cadence here…
