The reason corruption occurs from an immense gathering of chi, as opposed to radiance from an immense gathering, is from negative emotions. Excluding non-pony villains: Envy (Moon), greed or self-centeredness (Sunset), and hesitation (Midnight) caused these three (who are all seemingly the same species and the dimensional shift alters their DNA as it has for the last two years, lol) to succumb to darkness, or the Dark Side of the Force, if you’re not into KH. X3
 
Radiance, conversely, is caused by a sort of team energy, or friendship, Layman. Achievable from by being surrounded by individuals who care for and support you. Without friends, you’re alone. Loneliness leads to despair leads to anger leads to hate. Blah blah Star Wars. XD
 
I couldn’t find the right word for Midnight before: Midnight’s thirst for knowledge was manifested into a negatively-powered mode because the device she made (seriously, what the fuck was that thing, and how does it equate to anything on Earth? >3< ) stole the energy, the negative charge it received was thanks to the confusion and miscommunication that surrounded it. Thus, Dark Twilight. :j

It is established from it’s introduction that dark magic is what you get when you use magic with negative emotion behind it. In this case, guilt and anxiety. In Sunset Satan’s case; wrath, envy, malice, you name it. Speaking of dark magic…  
Typing this, it occurs to me the sirens getting magic power from disharmony is a parasitic version of what ponies do to use their most powerful magic. Magic based on harmony is by nature symbiotic. Parasitic magical empowerment vs symbiotic magical empowerment, one gathers magic by manipulation and theft, the other through cooperation and trust, the better method being obvious and great social/political/economic metaphor.

Sunset actually put it in a reasonable way, All that power made Sparkle Feel strong, like the world was her’s and all these people who ignored her or were jealous of her were ants. But, we’ve seen what can happen to an Alicorn if they have an emotional breakdown (Nightmare Moon), so I guess, yeah, magic definitely seems to have some teeth to it in the MLP setting once it gets more concentrated than say a strong unicorn’s magic.

People need to do art of Midnight Sparkle that invokes Twiabetes.

It could very well be that magic doesn’t mesh well with the human psyche, or we’re just more prone to corruption because we’re not used to magic.

One of the problems I had with the climax of Friendship Games was that the magic that Twilight’s spectrometer was collecting converted her into an evil magical being by default. It’s been said by Princess Celestia that Starswirl was a powerful unicorn who did not understand friendship - and he wasn’t possessed by dark magic. Or was he?  
Seems to me that in the Equestria Girls world, you either embrace the magic of friendship or dark magic embraces you. And if this is the case, I’d be okay with it if there was a sensible answer that followed it as to why this is the case (Hasbro’s meta mission statement of “friendship = magic” notwithstanding).  
C’mon, dhx crew; make with some exposition awreddy. Speculation makes my lone brain cell hurt.

Yeah, human Twiley wears horn-rimmed glasses ‘cos she lacks fashion sense; lots of us do, let’s be honest. When I was a kid, I wore plastic specs with tortoise-shell frames, I thought they looked smart at the time but in hindsight I know now that they looked bloody hideous.  
But beyond a poor fashion choice, I don’t see how her choice of glasses style is meant to be informing on her personality. :)

Didn’t much care for 85% of Friendship Games but I am indebted to it for the cosplay it will spawn at pony conventions.

Furry isn’t an ideology, though certain ideological trends can be spotted among furries. Ditto with hipsters.  
Don’t come and tell me that it’s a coincidence that Twilight was given horn-rimmed glasses, character-designs aren’t made with a dartboard. As a reflection of Human Twilight’s lack of fashion sense, it makes sense.  
It still looks ugly as hell.
