Oh great this is just fantastic, it’s Azathoth.
Edited because: I want this removed.
You put too much significant on humanity. At best, we’re gnats. At worst, parasites.
Yeah that’s very true.
Personally I like it because the juxtaposition of recognising our insignificance whilst also recognising just how great and almost eldritch Humanity is in our actions and even just in contrast to other species, it gives me this odd sense of…placement in the cosmos.
We are not big by any stretch of the imagination but neither are we small. We are the halfway point between Animal and God and I can see more and more in media and art that people are beginning to realise this and struggle with the responsibility such a recognition comes with. As Sartre himself coined it
“Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does.”
That’s neat, but doesn’t sound like Lovecraft, where the idea is to make humanity a meaningless passing speck in the universe.
I heard one theory that Azathoth was meant to represent the reader who by entering a dream like state where they imagine the universe in the story they in fact bring that universe into existence and as soon as they stop and “wake up” that universe ceases to be.
Ah, I got him mixed with Yog-Sothoth somehow. Funny enough, you can argue that Azathoth represents the heat-death of the universe, something that is much more real, and people think about much less.
Azathoth is the highest of the Lovecraftian gods mainly because everything else in existence is merely a dream he’s having. If he wakes up that dream will disappear and all the gods no matter how high and mighty they are will simply vanish which is why they are trying to keep him asleep. That is the scary thing about him.

A great dreamer so far and above anything we know that to make any judgements on their nature would be inherently false, a being so unhuman and full of chaos and order that just thinking about it as an actual possibility for the answer to all things is enough to start driving you mad…or maybe I’m already mad?
Like REALLY need it.
The “dream pony’s first day on the job” thing I mean.
No no, that guy’s at the exact center of the universe and is made entirely of flame.
