Marvel made me hate references so much. I mean I hate it before because most of these have nothing to do with MLP, they reflect Andy’s taste, and a lot of readers are too young to get them anyway, but the reason Marvel made me hate them is that now we have stories that are literally just “ooh I understood that reference!” - for the entire duration. Like if you throw in any meta pop culture and prequel jokes you think they’ll become a substitute for proper scenery and proper story? Yes, even bg props are important to a setting. And contunuity is good, you should acknowledge the history of the characters and setting as often as possible but you should do it in an in character way, not in a “remember when this happened, audience?” way.
