Fanon Style Hippogriffs and Classical-G4 Style Hippogriffs

I think ‘Classical Hippogriff’ works pretty well.  
Classical Hippogriff -> Hippogriff  
Griffling -> Hippogriff
 
and then just leave Hippogriff as an umbrella tag.
 
Cheese, I’ve gone ahead and added classical hippogriff to one image, if you wanna give that a definition. We can probably alias it if we come up with some other term laer.

Splitting up the tags. There may be distinctions between hippogriffs and “grifflings,” what a lame name, but that’s just my opinion but for the sake of the userbase splitting up the tags after they have been established for years would be such a jarring and confusing change that many OCs regularly tagged under “hippogriff” will be effectively hidden when searching for that tag.

I don’t think a full split is going to be happening at the point, based on everything that’s been said in the thread. Creating subtags seems to be the favoured option (at least from people who care), keeping ‘hippogriff’ as the umbrella tag.

If you havnt noticed the prevailing wind seems to be what I described there. Adding to one image so that changes can be made if the mod agrees are hardly an overreach of a user.

I think the “classical hippogriff” sub-tag would work pretty well. It would apply to hippogriffs based on the now canon design as well as differentiating hippogriffs such as silver quill from the “talon horses” like Cirrus, Vinny, Neutrino etc as well as any of the other hybridizations of horses and griffons.

Anyone who I’ve spoken with personally (most of which have hippogriff characters) feels this way. We do not need an entirely separate name for them, a sub-tag similar to “unicorn” and “classical unicorn” works just fine. Less confusing and less dictating over what people choose to call them.
 
This honestly doesn’t need to be drawn out any longer than it already has been.

so there would ultimately be 3 tags? Hippogriff as the umbrella tag then having two separate subclasses. Classical hippogriffs being “show style + silver-quill style” and then, as koonzy suggested, equigriffs being all other variations?  
Would it potentially suffice to have the latter tagged “hippogriff, original species” to separate itself from canon?

I imagine there’d ultimately be 3 tags. It makes things easier in general, since the purpose of tags is to categorize like things.
 
Given that we’re going with a tagging default species setup on even canon characters now, for even ponies, it really makes sense that derpi is going towards single tags for searching where possible.

Yea honestly we just wanna make sure the community we have doesnt have to just pack up and move on to be calling something completely different. We’ve grown and have a good selection of variation in our class.

I mean, I’ve been hearing about people having to remove tags from their art after someone’s started going through existing pictures and switching out the tags to “Griffling.” I don’t know whether it’s Gyro himself doing this, but it’s pretty clear that it is being forced upon people. It’s weird, too, because the fact that this has become such an argument should probably give people cause to stop and try to get a sense of perspective.

The hippogriff tag was already returned to all of the images days ago.  
And it was Gyrotech switching them which caused us to contact him and ask him to make this thread instead.  
The hippogriff tag isn’t going anywhere.  
And I’m still unsure how a tag can be “forced” onto people. When they can easily choose to ignore its presence entirely.  
And if we do decide to keep the Griffling tag, or a similar defined tag with a different name. Then the current tags still remain unchanged. Hippogriff is tagged on the images still. And there’s an additional tag for people who wish to filter/search a specific style of Hippogriff.

Yeah, well, the point remains that this tag was being forced on people, and frankly the amount of salt that’s come from this discussion is embarrassing to the community as a whole, and Gyro in particular. It’s quite evident that this isn’t something a fair few artists want to even really get into, and it’s not a very constructive conversation IMO. Best thing I can say is that it is marginally better than just mass-editing other peoples’ tags for them.

In your site rules it explicitly states that tag vandalism is prohibited, which includes bulk adding, removing, or modifying tags without permission whether that be from staff or the people who uploaded these pics. When Gyro made the change with his third party program, it was the artists and users who had to go through and undo the tag changes, which seems pretty “forced” to me, or in other words “without permission.”
 
By the way, why don’t you guys have a rule that prohibits manipulating site data using third party programs? Is that just a conscious choice or an oversight? 🤔

That would fall under rule 6, abusing site functionality. We will examine any evidence that can be presented of such behaviour.

To be fair, it IS kinda forced, as I doubt many people even cared all that much about a distinction before this event happened.
 
Plus ‘griffling’ sounds more like the name of a baby griffon to me.

I think the point he is getting at is that Gyro decided that they should be called “grifflings” when not everyone likes that name. It’d be like someone deciding sheep should be called “wool horses”, and then expecting everyone to add the “wool horse” tag to their pictures.
 
I understand Gyro’s reasoning for adding it, as he feels there needs to be a stronger distinction between the variants. But I can just as easily understand the opposition to it, as the community has always used the term “hippogriff”, and asking them to use additional tags can be interpreted as asking them to change that established culture.
 
So what we need to figure out is what’s best and most acceptable to the overall community. Rather that be adding the “griffling” tag, adding a tag to distinguish the newly established canon style, something different, or nothing at all.

You’re assuming that we don’t want people using third party programs, and see it as a negative thing. In reality, we explicitly allow people to write and use third party scripts and programs to interact with the site, so long as they otherwise comply with the site rules.
