I like the idea of Silver having a snarky side. I have a theory that she is almost as smart as Twilight and that after hearing Granny Smith’s story, she started reading books about Equestria’s history and creatures. She keeps this knowledge to herself so that nopony calls her an egghead.

There needs to a spinoff series that focuses and expends the characters of the CMC, Diamond, Silver and other fillies. Either as a TV series or comic books.

“Maybe”?

Again, I ask how much of it did you read before deciding that you were eminently qualified to passive-aggressively discourage people from reading my story by deeming it to be about 50% pr0n; a statement that you seemingly weren’t prepared to withdraw until challenged?

I am more than okay with my story not being to your specific taste (it’s certainly not for everyone) but I would appreciate it if you wouldn’t c***block me from turning fanfic readers on to it who might enjoy it. They’re able to decide for themselves if they want to read one, more, all, or no chapters.

Also, interesting you should bring up well-written jerks. When I write Tiara, I write her sort of like Daffy Duck: she’s an egotistical, greedy, self-centered jerk with a hair-trigger temper. She’s always cooking up some harebrained scheme to satisfy her own, selfish desires. Unlike the show, however, she never goes too far (cough Flight to the Finish cough) and is her own worst enemy. Most of the time, the Crusaders aren’t fazed by her lame putdowns (they find her more annoying than anything else) and end up getting under her skin before she gets under theirs (she’s got a fragile ego). Similar to Daffy, she may be a jerk, but she’s an entertaining jerk: she’s the kind of jerk you can’t hate simply because she makes you laugh at her own expense. Out of the two TDI characters you listed, she’d be most similar to Duncan.

Silver Spoon - meanwhile - is Diamond Tiara’s sarcastic devotee. While she genuinely cares about Diamond, she also thinks she’s an idiot and half the time her praise for Diamond is thinly-veiled sarcasm Diamond’s simply too dim to pick up on. She’s a smart-aleck and a know-it-all and relishes rubbing her smarts in other ponies faces. Nevertheless, she’s still nicer than Diamond (albeit not terribly pleasant) and is best summed up as a jerk with a heart of gold silver.

Yeah, fanon’s the main reason I like Tiara and Spoon, too. For all the talk in this fandom about how good MLP is at characterization, Tiara and Spoon’s cardboardness always stuck out like a sore thumb. Hell, even the CMC’s seemed to become more one-dimensional as time went on.
RWB

@youregoingtoloveme
I think it’d be nice if Spoon was made into the token snarker of the CMC’s.
@RWB
I saw that as more disinterest/apprehension than anything else. She never struck me as a dumb filly. If anything, Diamond was the one who struck me as a few cards short of a full deck.
@RWB
I like both.

Eh, I can arguably see the apprehension part, but even that’s a stretch. The disinterest angle doesn’t work at all.

Also, I like both characters- in good fanfics, in the show they were both essentially cardboard characters with no likable traits that were too shallow to even dislike until this episode.

Yes, they had a few very minor moments that you could argue built their characters, but they are easily one of the weakest things in the show and I seriously hope Spoon gets an episode to flesh her out into an actual character.

Compare them to say, Duncan from Total Drama. Dude’s on parole from juvie to compete on the show, is a massive bully and overall unpleasant person, but even he has some solid character to him and his not so cruel sides.
I don’t personally like him that much, but it’s not hard to see why he’s popular.

Heck, even Chris from TD, who is a lot flatter as a character(probably flatter than Tiara by a fair bit due to this episode) is a better character because they knew what they were doing with him as a villain- he’s funny because he’s so over the top and petty in his villainy. His cruelty ends up being a characterization tool that’s much stronger than what DT and SS have been.

I’m just annoyed with the “Silver Spoon is actually nice while Diamond Tiara is unredeemable” crowd.

Well at least Crusaders of the Lost Mark put an end to that nonsense, right?

We have yet to see the reasons behind what makes Silver Spoon tick regarding her motivation for bullying and why she’s so eager to be Diamond’s partner in crime/follower/cheerleader. I’d like to see more before I judge her too harshly.
.

I agree. I’m just annoyed with the “Silver Spoon is actually nice while Diamond Tiara is unredeemable” crowd.
RWB

When did the show imply that?

Flight to the Finish. The whole sequence where Silver Spoon is stumped as to how they should bully/manipulate the CMC to fail their show because they already called them Blank Flanks and it didn’t work.

It really does imply hat while Silver Spoon might be a bully, she’s just not a smart enough character to be one without a leader(and she certainly isn’t built for physical bullying either, lol).

Think of Crabbe and Goyle in Harry Potter(only not quite as dumb), without their physical siz/magic, and how Malfoy is a leader and the one that really makes them function as a bully group despite being the least “cruel”, as opposed to Crabbe, who’s a murderous brute who was so dumb he Darwin Awarded himself.

The only thing that Family Appreciation Day showed us about Silver Spoon that we didn’t already know was that she had a genuine appreciation for good storytelling. That hoof clap denoted respect. Diamond Tiara later called Granny Smith a kooky old lady. That insult denoted disrespect.

Fast forward to Ponyville Confidential and you get another strike against DT with the blackmailing. One Bad Apple had both of them being bullies and the same could be said of Flight To The Finish. The scorecard is Silver Spoon: -10 points Diamond Tiara: -50 points. They’re both a pair of stinkers but Silver is slightly ahead with a lower negative score.

Up until Crusaders of the Lost Mark, the character development they received let people draw their own conclusions. It was easy to believe that they felt that their privileged lives entitled them to the freedom to treat anypony any way they wanted. With CotLM, we see that DT was spoonfed this way of thinking by her mother, possibly since infancy.

Personally, I’d like to see her remain by Diamond Tiara’s side but with a bit of edginess to her as a throwback to when making fun of somepony for a laugh was considered business as usual. It might open the door to some exploration into her character as to why she can’t let go of the stinker lifestyle that Diamond Tiara has left behind by choice.

No, it actually would be better to have Silver Spoon learn a lesson, since she’s just as much of a jerk as Diamond Tiara is, and has no given actual reasoning for why she acts like one.

I’d like to see an episode where we learn something about Silver Spoon. Maybe have her bond with one of the CMC’s? cough Sweetie Belle cough

@RWB
People like to pretend she was always the nice one, but she never was any more pleasant than Tiara(outside a single moment in the Zap Apple episode), and the only reason you could claim she is because she doesn’t take a leadership role(also because the show implies she’s too dumb to be a legitimate villain like Tiara without Tiara there).

When did the show imply that?

@RWB
Also, Diamond learned that lesson in the actual episode, so please no retreading the same story!

I think it’d be better if she learned how to be a better friend over time rather than having it that she completely changed after one episode. Plus, it’d keep her interesting.
RWB

@youregoingtoloveme
I think that idea could be interesting, but I think it’d be better if Diamond was the one still acting like a jerk. She needs to learn that she can’t just order her friends around and treat them like playthings that exist for the sole purpose of amusing her.

Oh sure, I just want to see Babs again. I imagine she’d be pretty bewildered if she came back and DT was suddenly a nice pony though.

@PoolofCarp
That’d be super-hypocritical of Babs, considering she had no problem with going along with Tiara’s bullying. Plus, she seemed to take it further than Spoon or Tiara ever did.
PoolofCarp

I’ve wanted to see Babs come back since, well, since S03. Perhaps this would be a good opportunity to do that. Like she comes back and is all skeptical that DT has really reformed, there could be some great drama there.
