@Ihhh
Or the Simpsons or Fairly Odd Parents or Dexter’s Lab or etc. Shows almost never end giving you exactly how much you want; they either get cut down early before they can finish and/or leaving you wanting more (Samurai Jack, Harvey Birdman, Firefly is practically a meme for this) or they get dragged on and on until they start to suck.

I liked Undertale but I pray every month the popularity of it dies a bit so I can stop having it shoved in my face everywhere I go.

That was…well thought out :)

You certainly did better explaining your reasons than Mr X did.

I don’t hold a solid opinion on anything if I don’t know why I do.
If I wanted to look like an idiot, I’d just give you the short version (“It’s a pretentious indy art game”).

I still like Undertale but I can agree with your points.”
Cool.

Well, I have written a review on it, but if you’re not in the mood to read me completely shit on the game, I’ll try to make it quick.

-Undertale overemphasizes story > gameplay, as it so obviously wants you to be good. If you’re a pacifist (whether by choice or because you were guilted by the game into doing it), all you’ll be doing in battle are the same ACTs. This results in fights become monotonous bullet hells that don’t reward you anything except gold. I’ve given the game credit for having a unique battle system, but that can only carry it for so long. Battles altogether become pointless. If you decide to kill, the game makes absolute sure you feel guilty about it. And if you do genocide? Punished with Undyne the Undying and Sans. For those who like to say you have a lot of choice in Undertale, that’s not exactly the case, because, again, if you pay attention to the game’s undertones and attitude towards you killing, you will notice that being nice is almost forced onto you. As I point out in the review, the only battles I felt invested in were Asgore and Flowey, because I was free to fight them without the game coming after me for it.

-The story is actually kind of bland. When you look at it, it’s really just a basic adventure from point A to point B mixed with a bit of macguffin antics (7 human souls needed, yours will be the last). The only time things get any different or interesting is near the end, with the True Lab and Flowey’s origins. Funny thing is, though, the True Lab is another way Undertale punishes the player if they killed. If you didn’t do a pacifist run, you have to play the game all over again sometime to the point of meeting Alphys before you can access it. If you did do a pacifist run, you’re free to load up your save and go back to do the Alphys date for access. After that, you meet Asriel, fight him, and it becomes a generic “good guys win through the power of friendship” trope (yes, I’m aware of the irony posting something like that on this site). This doesn’t take into account the plotholes. For example, if the monsters were driven underground by humans in the first place, who’s to say things will be hunky dory when they get back up there? Wouldn’t the humans still be trying to kill them? And why do the monsters hate living underground so much? There’s not really any valid explanation except “We’ve been down here forever and we’re bored of being here”. There doesn’t seem to be any lasting negative effects of being underground.

-The music is great. That is something I will not deny.

So what game do I think did this stuff better?
Well, if you were able to read through my review without getting pissed, you’d know that I bring up Dark Souls a lot.

-Dark Souls does morality better because the game itself doesn’t outright punish you for your misdeeds. While the PvP community can hunt you now, Dark Souls doesn’t try to make you feel evil for the things you do. Considering the setting of Lordran, killing a certain NPC could be seen as trying to survive in the harsh world. Even the ending, choosing between linking the fire or letting the world fall into darkness, is rather amoral, despite the latter choice sounding like the obviously evil option. What’s great about Dark Souls is that anything you do in the game in terms of morality is up to the interpretation of the player, instead of being set in stone as good or evil as in Undertale. Dark Souls doesn’t try to push you to play a certain way so you can be taught a lesson.

-Combat is just so much more intense and rewarding in Dark Souls. The feeling of triumph over beating a difficult boss is all too good, and scanning any and all enemies for their patterns makes for good variety, as enemies are a bit more unpredictable in the game. I will give a point to Undertale for making the bullet hells change when there’s more than one enemy and when you do certain ACTs, though.

-Both games’ soundtracks are pretty good. ‘Nuff said.

Another game I didn’t point out in that review that I think did morality better was Far Cry 3. I guess I’ll do it here.

-As with Dark Souls, Far Cry 3 doesn’t try to push you into playing a certain way. What’s great about the way FC3 is made is that you, as the player, begin to feel more powerful as Jason does, too. In a way, the game’s theme of insanity is better delivered than Undertale’s “resolution through peace” message, since the player can better connect with Jason’s increasing desire for power (Jason becomes more bloodthirsy, the player wants to acquire new skills for killing). It’s only up to the player at the end to determine whether or not they’ve learned anything from the adventure (via the player-determined ending, which I’ll admit was a bit underwhelming). Undertale sets three paths you can go down (pacifist, neutral, genocide) and wants to push you into doing pacifist, instead of letting the player choose the way they want to play. Playing pacifist doesn’t really teach the player anything when most people already know that killing is wrong.

That’s about all I can come up with off the top of my head.

Oh trust me, we had worser things happen on this site.

On this image, a user named Mr X said One Punch Man was overrated and didn’t even explain his reasons. Everyone then jumped on him, asking for his explanation on why he thinks it’s overrated? His replies kept dodging the question.
Only then did one user, RIG, realize that this guy was trolling by putting out baited comments like ‘One Punch Man is overrated’.
In the usage and lifetime of the internet, certain meanings have lost their purpose (Like gay being used as an insult, for example). ‘Overrated’ has become one of these meanings lost and that’s when everyone just gave up and left.

Now I know what you must be asking: “What does that have to do with this comment?”. I’m making a point that people need to stop getting their knickers in a twist when someone says “Insert game here is overrated or mediocre”. It’s their opinion, their view. You don’t HAVE to agree with it.

I like Undertale and I’m not raging at you for thinking it’s “mediocre” because it’s your view. While I may not necessarily agree with it, I’m gonna stay polite as possible and not devolve into a shouting match where we throw insults at each other.

Spongebob? In any case, it’s fine to say what it is, spoiler tags are there if needed.

@Jerkface
It’s just your view of a video game, there’s nothing wrong with that.
That said, it’s always better to explain why you feel the way you do.

Perhaps you could name some reasons why you feel it doesn’t live up to the hype, or some games you think are better than it. Maybe specifically ones that do whatever you feel was missing, better.

People expected FIM stuff to fade out too. When things are popular for being good, they don’t fade.

Even if they started good and then end in a horrible car accident level of mess, that initial goodness can keep them going for a very long time. Not gonna name the thing I’m talking about there.
