Do they? Cause Im sure a joke like this only works when it still makes sense on way or another.  
Just like many already-subverted jokes in the show, something like this makes little sense when you know its already been subverted. Spike is a national hero with a statue and thousands of fans in the Crystal Empire.  
He already knows what being important feels like, he even brings it up reguarly now.  
Thus, the “joke” doesn’t work anymore. Hope that made it clear enough.

I don’t really care if you liked the episode or not. I personally enjoyed it.  
That has nothing to do with what I said though, since Spike IS seen and treated as a hero there.

Don’t get use to that feeling.

People seems to no realize when somthing is a reference to a joke far more.

Pretty sure he felt it when he saved a stadium full of ponies from certain death and they erected a statue on his honor. People seem to forget that scene surprisingly often.

I distinctly remember seeing a “Spike Owned Count” joke in a fan animation. It might have been one of the “Ponies the Anthology” videos; I’m not sure.
