I think giving him wings, if it ever happens, would be toy related. What we’re probably going to get is some sort of contrived explanation about how he’s a different species of dragon or something. I hope I am wrong.

I fully agree they should have done it, and about the boundless potential for amusing situations that could come as the result of it as well. However, a part of me can’t help but believe that they wouldn’t bring such a massive change to his character midway through a season. Probably because episodes 3-24 of every season are usually randomized and don’t tend to connect with each other most of the time, so I feel such a large impact episode that would permanently (or not, depending on whether he can change back) change Spike’s appereance, is probably something they’d include in a season opener or finale.

Sure, they did it with CMC’s cutiemarks, but that was a much less drastic cosmetic change than making “little Spike” larger than all his friends and with wings. Something like that would be premiere/finale material, in my opinion.

This. THIS goddamit.
If not for the fact that it was a random episode instead of a season premiere/finale, this would’ve been the perfect time to let Spike go through some magical dragon puberty thing and hopefully get his wings.
On the other hand, the prospect of an episode in Ponyville based on how the Mane6 have to deal with how said magical puberty hits Spike like a truck, is pretty tempting as well.

Even though it wasn’t a season premiere/finale, they still should have done it. Spike has actually done pretty well as a character this season, mostly in relation to characters outside the Mane 6 (i.e. Ember and Starlight). A physical growth, brought about by holding the Bloodstone Scepter, would have been a nice addition to this development.

And imagine the amount of physical comedy you could have gotten out of this. Like, we don’t see Spike for an episode or two after this, so that we are pleasantly surprised to see him again. And the first thing we see is him knocking over a vase or something because he’s having trouble controlling his wings, like how Twilight had trouble with her wings post-ascension. Then, they could have had an episode centered around Spike’s new state of being: flying with Rainbow, using his new physical strength with AJ, stuff like that, showing that he is much more than a mail-delivery dragon. This could have led to more little scenes or even another full episode dealing with this kind of thing. But alas, that physical growth will probably never come.
