I think you’re confusing “best known” with “latest role” for some of those.
 
Angelina Jolie is best known for Lara Croft in Tomb Raider, the role that actually put her on the map. Prior to this she didn’t have any blockbuster roles. Probably best known as the hacker chick in Hackers before Tomb Raider.
 
And Halle Berry is best known for Storm from the X-Men now.
