Pinkie’s ‘official friendship ambassador to the yaks’ was self-appointed, and she insisted to Twilight to make it official. Fast-forward a few episodes later, Spike was already ‘official friendship ambassador to the dragons’, so Twilight appointed Spike sometime offscreen.

I’ve seen more theories pointing to the fact that he is a teenager but due to lack of greed he has remained a small looking dragon. Remember, Twilight hatched him when she was a little kid. She is now an adult as far as we can tell. That would have to make Spike a teenager at the least and a young adult at the most.
