I wouldn’t consider either of them to be “best pony” to me, but they are adorable and I definitely think that a lot of the hate they receive from the fandom is unwarranted (and yes, I’ve seen sheer unbridled hatred of these two).

They do act like normal kids sometimes. Usually in the background somewhere, but they have their moments. Hearts&Hooves Day, for one.

Easily the best. They bring new to the table and are fun foils and are genuinely cute.

they aren’t the BEST ponies by any means, But they are really damn adorable, and I think if they were shown just acting normal occasionally instead of only being brought out for when they had to be antagonists, they would be much more likable, I blame the writers. There is so much you could do with, well, a rich character, none of the other ponies in the show are rich, or at least not enough that it matters, a lot of more interesting scenarios could happen with the CMC trying to get their cutiemarks if they had a rich frienemy to ask favors from. maybe they could all go on a yacht and get shipwrecked? hell, the redemption episode would be enough. I just hope they do more with her, the bullying styck is getting very VERY old, and I think the repetition is why people REALLY hate them, it’s just annoying to see them pop up now.

They’re pretty much the typical bratty school bullies, but even then they’re not THAT terrible, like starswirl said, there are those that are MUCH worse, so I can’t really bring myself to dislike them.
 
Oh and Tricks reasoning actually makes DT sound realistic and slightly understandable, I tend to not be able to hate characters like that

I always figured it was some kind of jealousy for her father showing Applebloom approval for her… whatever it is people like about Applebloom, but I wouldn’t rule out your idea either.

I have a rather strange problem with a lot of the hate these two get… and it’s difficult to say this right, so please bear in mind that I don’t in any way, shape or form want to make light of what other people have gone through.
 
Here’s it, though… someone very close to me was bullied in school. Very much so. And compared to what she suffered through, Diamond and Silver’s acts don’t look all, I don’t know, deeply hurtful? Does that make sense?  
I just, find it hard to actually hate them when the bullies I’ve met were the kind of people who would do things like lie in wait in mixed-gender groups to ambush a lone girl so they could grab her and have everyone kick her in the shin a few times. Or stick used gum in her hair after hiding her school supplies. Or telling her to her face that no matter how hard she’ll try, noone will ever like her, noone will ever let up, that she’s worthless and always will be, and that it’s all her fault. Or make the teacher who just had a concussion and memory-loss believe that his colleague was his wife, and watch the man make an ass of himself while filming it. Or…
 
Well, you get the point. So, I can’t call them worst ponies. Nevermind that Babs instantly transformed into a much worse bully than either of them, and outside of hanging around Babs they didn’t even seem all that interested in messing with the Crusaders.

I love to hate them.
 
And “Ponyville Confidential” was Diamond Tiara at her best.

I like Diamond, mostly because she the least brainless of the school children we’ve seen so far. I also have this Headcanon going on that Diamond isn’t a bully in general, and just has a really specific hatred of Applebloom. Something to do with her Dad’s business with the Apple family.

I’m kind of in the middle concerning them, yeah they’re spoiled brats but they aren’t as bad as some fans make ’em out to be.

Honestly, I like them. Yes, they’re just bullies, but they aren’t terrible. They’re the only recurring antagonists. (Except for Trixie, but she’s not evil or out to best the main six anymore.)  
I do believe that they could change. They are just kids and I don’t like all the hate they get. (Diamond Tiara and Applebloom’s families do work in tangent. Maybe, when they get teenagers or young adults, they could bond over the workload.)
 
And I did know a girl like Diamond Tiara when I was a kid. She did bully me like nothing else was important in her life, but she mostly did it because she wanted me to like her. (She was apparently the most popular girl in our school.) Never got the nerve to ask her to be my girlfriend.
 
Silver Spoon…I’ve never cared for followers, and I’ve only just grown to like her through fanfics.
