What I like about this is the detail of fear on Megan’s face. I loved Megan so I am glad she was never turn into glass and shatter, but the animators gave Megan emotion and not just a blank face considering the dire situation they were in.

Heck, I remember a 60’s or 70’s Mr. Magoo cartoon where he portrayed various historical characters, and Magoo got killed dead on screen more than once along with other characters. That was surprising to see when I was a boy.

I wouldn’t have been surprised if this happened during his episodes.
That was some insane levels of bad luck.

I think the key difference is how old 80s / early 90s cartoons,
had that childlike whimsy and cuteness to them most of the time,
a charming fairy tale feeling.

This is what makes fairy tales all the more scary when they suddenly go (semi)grimdark.

This reminds me of how much a scen from the Care Bares Nutcracker special scared me. The one where the Vaseer turned the characters one by one into firewood.

That shit gave me nightmares.

Even the 1990s had this. Ah, I remember my first “Are You Afraid Of The Dark?” Episode where a kid dies by falling off a bridge in the first four minutes with his friend failing to save him and then showing up as a ghost to his friend years later. Nobody else sees his ghost of course.

Does anyone else think that piece of cloth he’s holding lines like a…penis?

The 80s and 90s seemed to be able to get away with much darker stuff than you can now. I remember a few cartoons from that era where character died, and not just background characters, main characters. At least one cartoon from the 90s “The Animals of Farthing Wood” had a body count of named characters that wouldn’t be out of place in some of the more bloody adult dramas of today.
