“narrative dramatics” always makes sense to me, because it’s just showing the dramatic scene in slo-mo. like the football guy jumping to intercept. when a genre savvy character actually tries to interrupt, it’s like ‘zap, done’ in canontime, except if the writers are trying to make fun of narrative dynamics.
that said, it would have been awesome if she zapped them at a full on charge at her instead of just standing there like mooks.
but then, so would the crystal empire at night. some awesome things simply can never be…
‘Course not, but a few prepared traps and/or some kinda divide-and-equalize strategy might’ve padded out Part 1’s action quotient. Heck, just stick that net up on the cave ceiling, drop it & zap Twiley first.
…Did you want part 2 to be half an hour of dead air?
Come to think of it, a line of scrimmage might just put ‘em close enough to foul the De-Marking Beam’s path-especially if they’re trying to fend off a diving peggie. As seen here? Yeah, they’re not stopping Dash from a hovering start.
As for “freeze at horrific magic you were sorta forewarned about?” Natural but unproductive reaction, ‘specially with their prior season-capper experiences. At least Twilight tried, though maybe a shield would’ve stopped the DMB. Still not so bad as the time they just watched A.K. Yearling get worked over.
Depends on who’s starting from where, but the Stepford Ponies might be able to get in position if they expect they’ll need to block before the need actually arises. But honestly…
@gorkspewdium @poiuj1
…I’d forgive them for being frozen in shock. Being told about the unmarking is one thing, but seeing it for yourself is probably quite another.
@Ichijoe
If by “best pony” you mean “dangerous fanatic”. :P
That still seems to depend on mojo-impaired villagers being quick enough to stop at least two MVPones (’specially RD) from bumrushing somepone a few body-lengths away-specially since later in that ep, we see a distinct vigor gap ‘tween the Equalized Six and their recharged allies. Thank plot for mandated reaction time, huh?
@poiuj1
Yeah, and unlike other pernicious magick types (Sombra, Discord, Tirek), Glimmy’s still presumably mortal & punchable. Our Heroines could stand to work on their reflexes vis-a-vis ‘mundane’ pone-aggressors.
5 seconds stun, 5 seconds cutie mark extraction - Twilight (bonus 5 seconds of smugness)
1 seconds stun, 5 seconds cutie mark extraction - Mane 5/6
At 2 seconds per pony, SG could have been reached since she was only a few paces away.
The big question would be how fast she can switch gears, then.
The point isn’t their toughness, just that there’s nothing you could do with them to distract Starlight, and they could buy her just enough time to finish.
Initial double-talk I can buy, but if Dash & AJ can reach her before she switches gears from equalizing Twiley, she might be too busy eating hoof to crank out a beam or shield. How well do we think unicorns can focus through blunt trauma?
Point on the hostage thing, which probably wouldn’t occur to the unengaged three anyway. Still, would gimped pones with ordinarily upper-medium tier mojo really be much (if any) tougher than the loads of Changeling drones we saw Squiggley, Shy & Pinks whup on?
You sure they’d care about hostages? They’re all the same, or at least like to think they are, so any one might be expendable for the greater good.
It might just force Starlight to break “character” and use her more combat-oriented spells, then come up with a hasty explanation for it later.
Yeah, that sounds about right. Pinks, Squiggletail and Shy have occasionally demonstrated more than enough moxie to clean house on a pack of energy-hobbled villagers whilst Dash & AJ run interference for Twi. I suppose they might have hangups about whomping on other pones (as seen in that Daring Do ep), but still.
The spell seems to work like a tractor beam, drawing the pony’s magic into the cutie mark and then off of the pony. Disrupting the beam would probably stall the process. AJ and/or RD could have attacked SG in enough time to break the spell on Twilight, then forced SG to fight or retreat. The spell of sameness probably isn’t an effective weapon against a multi-front attack. SG was lucky that the other 5 were trapped by the necessity of “narrative dramatics” to cast a net over the tightly packed group.
She does seem a little busy. Perhaps some judicious rock-throwing & hostage-taking would help-not like these Equalpones(C) make for the most formidable mob.
The only one who might know the answer to that question would be Twilight, and I don’t think she can help right now.
Narrative dramatics are the 12-pound albatross pecking pragmatism’s ear.
But yeah, what happens when you smack a high-octane unicorn mid-spellcast? Harmless dissipation? Feedback shockwave? Involuntary damage to whatever they’re fiddling with? Probably depends on the spell.
Doing it accidentally and immediately prioritizing undoing it above all else is different from doing it on purpose and planning to do it to everypony you can get your hooves on.
Among other differences.
Eh, she did the same thing to them a little while back, and somehow she got a damn crown out of it.
You smell that? That’s the smell of karma.
