anyone else feel the “protagonist masters a skill it took the originator years to master in just a short period of time” is overused? more so if the protag can use it with impunity while the one who made it suffers drawbacks using it.

I went out of my way to have a character who never masters anything because of that, she just learns some basics then works them into her overall fighting style,

I honestly think this kind of thing would work better from a choreography standpoint. Yeah, one style is impressive to watch, but it’s even more impressive to see someone constantly and fluidly jumping between them. Or, heck, like Avatar kinda touched on, combining them with a style that one is already a master of to improve that one.
