He-Man & The Masters of the Universe Creators Discuss Giving A New Generation “Their He-Man”
 
Not to be mistaken with Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Netflix is returning to the world of Eternia with a brand new take on the lore of He-Man and his fellow masters with the upcoming series, He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe. We here at Comicbook.com recently had the opportunity to talk with Showrunner Rob David and Co-Executive Producer Jeff Matsuda about this new CG animated series that is much more skewed toward a younger audience and is looking to introduce the newest generation to a warrior of Castle Grayskull of their very own.
 
Rob David started the discussion by tapping into what makes Masters of the Universe a story that stands the test of time, and why he felt it was time for the franchise to receive a new coat of paint:
 
“Masters of the Universe is just one of those stories, I’m not going to call it a brand, it’s a living breathing story. It’s a special story in that it has the potential to speak to multiple generations at once. What we did with this is that we had the opportunity to re-imagine the Masters of the Universe for this next generation of kids and for those like us that are kids at heart.”
 
Extrapolating on this point, David broke down the idea of giving a new generation their own version of the franchise to call their own, while remaining true to the core tenants of Masters of the Universe:
 
“We wanted to give this next generation their He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. We wanted to distill what makes the original great at its core, and then look for a way to recontextualize it for kids today. At its heart, it’s pure MOTU but it’s told with new instrumentation.”  
Jeff Matsuda, the show’s co-executive producer who helped design these new characters and has a background with energetic re-imaginings such as The Batman animated series and TMNT, confirmed that it was exciting to rework the original story for a new audience:
 
“It’s exciting for the new generation to have something for themselves.”

He-Man & The Masters of the Universe Showrunners Discuss The New Futuristic Style & Robot Orko
 
In an exclusive interview with Comicbook.com, Showrunners Rob David and Jeff Matsuda sat down to talk about their upcoming return to the world of Eternia via He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe, which is a stark departure from Masters Of The Universe: Revelation which was released on Netflix earlier this year. With the upcoming CG animated series skewed toward a new generation, the creative minds behind the series explored why the series is taking a more futuristic approach to mythology and how a robotic version of Orko factors into the landscape change.
 
Rob David, who acts as the showrunner and Vice President of Creative Content for Mattel Television, went into detail regarding the decision to add some futuristic technology into the mix and how the core tenants of the Masters of the Universe makes for this to be a perfect inclusion into the franchise:  
“Masters of the Universe at its core is a mashup of science fiction and fantasy and that’s a wonderful thing about it. That is definitely present here, it’s gloriously present. It’s dialing up a part of the story, taking into account a futuristic world that children are now living in, but we didn’t forget the magical aspects.”  
David expanded on the idea of creating characters for a new generation with a starkly different take on Orko, the pint-sized wizard who sacrificed himself during the events of the Masters of the Universe: Revelation series while battling against the villainous Scareglow:
 
“Robot Orko is reimagined in order to fuse these two worlds, and he’s a Pinnochio character who can pull on our heartstrings. Our Orko was created because he had the memories of Orko the Great fused within him and this robot reboots and tries to wield magic.”  
He-Man And The Masters Of The Universe is set to arrive later this week, with Netflix offering the official description below:
 
“Mighty teen Adam and his heroic squad of misfits discover the legendary power of Grayskull and their destiny to defend Eternia from sinister Skeletor.”

Okay. Sounds interesting. Sounds like the real Orko died and the robot took over. This isn’t a sequel to Revelation is it?

There’s also talk of Amazon developing a live action She-ra series! I wonder what that could be like? What direction would it take? Would remain fantasy-Sci-Fi? Would it be set closer to reality? What characters will be used? What if any influence will it take from the recent Netflix She-ra?

New Spanish language He-Man book!  

I just watched the first episode of the new cgi He-man cartoon.  
 
It was really weird, character redesigns are so extreme it’s hard to tell who’s who. It’s certainly not bad, and the voice talent is a HUGE improvement over Revelation. The story is completely disconnected from anything previous. In this version, Adam was lost as a child and raised by the tiger tribe, a group of humanoids and green tigers. Theirs a lot of cool little references to various MotU elements. It’s pretty weird, but I’m excited to see more. I can’t imagine where it could go.

I really wish he’d stop pretending He-man is going to be the focus.

Here’s a bunch of random stuff.

Screenrant wrote an article comparing the two newest incarnations of MotU. It seems to have been written by someone who doesn’t really know what’s going on. I saw the title, “Why the Netflix He-Man Remake Works (And Kevin Smith’s Revelation Doesn’t)”.
I thought it would be refreshing to read something that actually promotes the cgi series over of Revelation.
The article continues the weird rumor that Revelation was “review bombed”,even though they later compare the scores from Rotten Tomatoes, the scores that are supposedly unfairly stacked against Revelation. They also claim that the cgi show is better received because it focuses on He-man. I’d say it has a balanced focus, but the main reason it’s better received is that it’s just better written. The article also seems to think Revelation is unpopular simply for its focus on Teela and lack of He-man. The article doesn’t say much about Teela’s radical personality change and mood swings, the bleak tone, the cringey humor, miscast voices…
So Revelation remains critique proof even in a negative article.
