Comics are B-canon, the main series take priority. Said priority made the horrendous “Seige” arc vanish.

I’m grateful for that even if it came so late in the game.

Hot take: I didn’t mind Fosgitt’s artwork much. I didn’t like when his work involved heavy action though. It was better with Smaller stories, especially ones involving fillies

watching people still defend fosgitt reminds me of the time in high school i defended a guy who was being called a thief by insisting he hadn’t stolen anything, and then a week later he stole my bike.

they were always non-canon. that was just additional confirmation. proving the comics aren’t canon is like proving the earth isn’t flat these days.

it’s why it’s a good idea to not take ’em as canon. i never understood why people get mad at the idea of the comics not being canon, as if multiple continuities is a new or a bad thing.

Heck, even the show has trouble keeping its own continuity straight every now and then. Trying to figure out where side material fits into it just leads to even more headaches.

the simplest solution is almost always the best. the simple solution being “they just aren’t canon” is probably why the show writers just chose to completely disregard what the comics establish and just do whatever they wanted to do instead.

That’s what editors are supposed to be there for, to act as some sort of QA and lore “gatekeepers” when it comes to decisions taken in terms of artistic or writing freedom. They in turn ask some contact at Hasbro for input when it gets tricky to figure out.
 
It does seem like this process got heavily streamlined over the years, maybe said contacts stopped caring or just got phased out and/or replaced, editors came to see that week+ delay only to be told “Eh, whatever” 90% of the time as deadly to their already strained schedule. With many editors working on the comics, it’s also natural that some will have a more lax take on their job, with that infamous “Seige” blunder coming to mind.
 
Loss of continuity and stability is a common outcome of long-term development as a project goes through multiple hands and leads.

From what I heard, the comic editor doesn’t care for the comics out of spite because he wanted to work on TMNT.

As much as I blame the comic’s editor for it’s critical current state, I would like to see a source on that.

Are people really now comparing working on a comic, where you basically control all of the art, to working on a widely released cartoon? Fosgitt chose to work on MLP, that’s what makes his admission bad. Of course some people working on the show probably aren’t fans, but they didn’t choose to work on it, they were given it. Fosgitt was personally asked to work on it, chose not to educate himself (I doubt that he couldn’t watch an episode or Google character designs so his excuse is moot) and decided to not “be precious” with something he was hired to work on. That alone is borderline arrogant and completely backwards: you should follow the source material closer than anyone because you really don’t know what’s going on. That he’s confused so many people were upset by it is baffling.
 
Fosgitt is a fan of the Muppets. Imagine if someone working on the Muppets comics had never seen the Muppets, didn’t really know who the characters were, and drew them all as quadrupeds who were the wrong colors and designs. I’m sure he’d be pretty pissed. Heck, what if someone drew Bodie Troll completely off-model because they “didn’t want to be precious with it?” He’d hate that even more. I guess what I’m saying is that he didn’t need to work on MLP, but once he did he should have put in even the slightest amount of effort and maybe considered how he would feel as a fan if something he liked got the kind of work that he produced for MLP. I’m pretty sure he only ever worked on MLP to get more eyes on his original property.

From what I hear it’s not that he doesn’t care about MLP, he just cares MORE about the other stuff he works on at IDW like TMNT or Godzilla.

Actually the topic of the show and comic continuities came up because of the season 9 premiere rendering Siege of the Crystal Empire moot. It didn’t have anything to do with the Fosgitt conversation.

Probably both.

It’s possible that it might just be a regular MLP story he’s working on and not an actual MLP/Sonic crossover.

Ian Flynn is a great writer, but i’m desperately hoping he’s just doing an MLP story and not a crossover
