"Japanese reading order" and "right to left"

I’m not sure… Should right to left imply Japanese reading order, or should it be the other way around?

Japanese is top-to-bottom, right-to-left except when it is left-to-right, top-to-bottom. So, it’s only right to left when it’s top to bottom first. Like in newspapers.

Otherwise it’s left to right. Like in computers and signs and magazines.

Unless you’re talking about reading order, instead of reading order. Then it’s right-to-left, top-to-bottom for panels and text balloons but within the text balloon it’s either top-to-bottom, right-to-left, or left-to-right, top-to-bottom.

All seriousness aside, ‘right to left’ should be aliased into ‘Japanese reading order’ since the late has the actual explaination.

Honest to Celestia I was half way through that before I realized you meant panels. I’m so used to wrangling just the text.

While we’re on this topic, is there a tag for not japanese reading order, when an image looks like it should be read right-to-left but isn’t? Think “localized” mirrored manga pages you sometimes find with lower-quality translations and the like.

If not, then there is now, because I just remembered

where the text order was flipped for no reason and put not japanese reading order on it. Or is there a better way to tag this?

Uhm … now I’m getting flashbacks to redrawing translated manga to fit English dialog balloons … I gotta admit, I’m a fan of that tag, but it seems really particular. Is it common enough to require tagging though? It feels like it is marking a negative. Like, equivalent to !japanese reading order.

I mean, I have no idea how I’d even search for that to figure out how common it is. I just happened to know about this particular ponified manga panel…
Hmmm, let’s search for *manga*… It seems the whole official my little pony: the manga is left-to-right. That’s a surprise. I also spotted some left-to-right manga (style) comics, those are less of a surprise.

I see the point about marking a negative, but I was thinking more in line of tags like not applejack.

Hmmm … maybe an “English reading format manga” tag?

I wonder if anyone without a “Talks Fancy” badge even thinks about these things.
