I know DARPA is working on portable nuclear reactors. And they were also looking into thorium reactors back in 2010.

All those happen due to human incompetence and lack of experience in the field. Not because of Nuclear in itself.  
Fukishima happened due to negligence and shortcuts, to cut costs when that was a bad idea, Chernonbyl happened because of human error during a safety test and faulty design, all easily avoidable if you take the right measures, and don’t cut corners, and put the right people in.

Radiation? Fucking really? I’m gonna be honest with you, I’m always mad when someone uses that as an excuse. Did you know that visible light is a form of radiation? Or how about the goddamn Sun? Oh oh, let’s not even begin to talk about radio waves.
 
These are all forms of electromagnetic radiation. What makes it dangerous is the frequency. Nuclear energy is dangerous because of the high frequency it is, like putting a guy under a light bulb for 10,000 years non-stop, assuming he’s in an isolated reflective room and doesn’t die from old age. Cancer is overblown as a risk anyway. In fact, you are just as likely to get cancer now too.
 
Carbon emissions from current energy productions is far higher than anything we have. In fact, nuclear energy is one of the few ways to have zero-carbon emission. Heat is just dumb so I’m just gonna ignore you even said that.
 
All those locations you gave all have reasons why they failed. Chernobyl was due to incompetence and economics which shouldn’t have happened anyway if the leaders weren’t stupid and Fukushima is due to a fucking tsunami.

Fukishima happened because of corner cutting, they built a wall around the reactor to protect it but it was too short because they wanted to save a few pennies.

Yeah, I heard. Still, that would’ve only reduced the effects from the tsunami + earthquakes. The place would still be fucked in the end. Not as serious as now, but still serious.

going off on a tangent because of semantics makes you look bad, you know dang well they meant the huge amounts of ionizing radiation that can strike down huge numbers of people with cancer, or just outright break their DNA so bad they die from simply not having enough functional cells and leave a blighted land humans can’t settle for centuries, and then there is stuff like the huge amounts of radioactive water from fukashima, the fact that almost no plants have permanent spent fuel storage plans,

It’s a risk vs reward thing. Yes, the consequences is huge but we can minimize the risk to the point that the only way it’ll ever happen is if God came and dropped down a meteorite. And the rewards are huge regardless of what you do.
 
Humans are negative creatures by nature. We’re obsessed with risk that we ignore the reward. It’s stupid and honestly deserves a slap in the head, but it’s just how people work. It’s also why religion scares followers into repenting via “going to Hell” shtick.

I swear, if we still use coal and fossil fuels for the majority of energy generation by the time I die of old age, I will curse the world from the afterlife to fall into the Sun because you guys all suck.

Nuclear, solar, hydro, wind and thermal are all good clean sources, nuclear is only scary because the two disasters that happened were the fault of human incompetency. Solar is too expensive of an investment to be long term until it can be used to make new ones.

Nuclear sucks because it takes decades to build one and it needs to take decades unless you want another Chernobyl
