Is “redemption by death” preferable to your standard villain redemption?
It’s amazing how much I say “It’s not the idea, it’s the execution of said idea” and somehow you never seem to absorb it.

No you’ve got it perfectly right. I’ve written three scripts for it for In A Minute and so far she just bumbles her way through everything, and she is about as charming as a tiny piece of glass lodged in the urinary tract.

Why do so many fans seem to think that quick redemptions are some new or encroaching thing in MLP? Have they all forgotten how the show started? Nightmare Moon got blasted with rainbows and then boom, Luna gets accepted back into society, just like that. Whether they like it or not, speedy acceptance after villain defeats is not new, it just had a long post-Luna hiatus, that’s all.

You just answered your own question. If you pay attention to what people are saying, it’s not the speedy redemption that’s the problem.
It’s a combination of speedy redemption that are haphazardly written with unsympathetic characters who show zero improvement (Starlight) and the fact that this same template has been used five times in a row with the writers adamantly refusing to do something different.
You’re also forgetting that Nightmare Moon was the worst villain in the series until Starlight came around. And it was only when she came back at the end of Season 5 as the Tim Curry of My Little Pony did she start being a fun villain.
It may have been in the series since Season 1, but the writers didn’t abuse it so thoroughly in Season 1. Since Season 5 it’s been one crappy reformation after another. It wasn’t exactly a good concept to begin with, but at this point it’s just boring.
Villains like the Storm King, Tirek, and Adagio Dazzle are fun. Remember fun? That thing we’re not allowed to have anymore?

I did at first when I had no idea what had even happened. As I started to get more information on what actually happened, I started kicking myself that I didn’t drop the disgraceful fuck sooner.
