There’s certainly moments where I disagreed with Whitley (particularly in suggesting Flutterdash and in reblogging that comment about punching “700 derps”), but on the whole I think he’s been handling this tempest in a teapot pretty well.
You have really terrible taste in heroes.
I don’t see why having a bisexual character would hurt the LBGT community, rather than ‘pure gay’.
It’s probably not the same in impact, but I can’t see it being negative.
Well Rarity would really not suprise me if she was bi. She can appreciate both male and female beauty. But, yeah. making a bisexual character after Korra instead pure gay one could be still hurtfull for LGBT.
But when it comes to Rainbow, we should first see how well her interactions goes with Soarin in Newbie Dash episode and Fluttershy’s brother in Flutter Brutter episode. Maybe she will turn out as a very straight character.
Then they’d just argue that she’s bi. Then again, you could say that for every single character ever if you really wanted to make that claim.
Rarity has canonically likes stallions though, so they’d just be turning a character gay just to have a gay character.
Wouldn’t be the first time. :V
And if Whitley were smart and knew anything about IDW’s other series (I’m doubtful on both these things) he’d point out this
Now granted Transformers comics are aimed at an older audience then MLP is, so things like death are a subject they have no problem talking about, as opposed to how MLP had to dance around the subject with Tank, but you can’t say Hasbro would veto same gender couples when they’ve been giving a thumbs up to it in one of their biggest franchises.
But seriously no one tell him about this it might cause him to fight harder.
I would pick either LyraBon for minor pairing and RariJack as major representation. Dash is too stereotypical to even represent LGBT in a serious matter.
Great summary.
It’s the only available way to spit reality in the face.
Kid’s cartoon or not, one of the arguments for this is for children to learn homosexual relationships are normal. The problem lies where Whitley is pushing his boundaries, and making stupid comments like these.
@Draco_2k
I love the claim when a bisexual is in a relationship currently with the opposite sex and then people claim that they’re straight now. Ridiculous.
It’s not necessarily ignorance, it’s often plain old-fashioned bigotry.
I would like to remind everyone that bisexuality is totally, totally a thing. Attraction to one gender is not indicative of a lack of attraction to the other. Why do people forget this? It almost never even seems hostile in the slightest, just that people are genuinely forgetting it…
@Lucky Shot
Dude… “gayface”? Really? And you think “deviant” is better than “queer”? I don’t understand you at all, person who I’ve seen enough around here to kind of remember. I mean, you’re no Pagan or C Money (and thank the lord for that… at least in the case of C Money, Pagan’s pretty cool), but you are definitely more recognizable to me than every site assistant that isn’t Minus.
@GrumpyPony
Meanwhile, from ‘94 in Japan…
Though the dub didn’t cut it, because the original Sailor Moon dub was a special kind of incompetent that somehow turned the lesbian couple into an incestuous lesbian couple, among other feats. I wonder if Lyra and Bon-Bon will ever be stated to be cousins?
Have another SJW criticize the first for not being ‘SJW’ enough!
Alright, thanks for explaining.
He has no say in the show at all no, and I’m assuming insufficient authority to do in the comic either. I believe he suggested the idea of the show touching on homosexual romance in the same kind of vein it’s touched on hetero romances to fellow comic and show staff during a panel at Babscon (using FlutterDash as a possible example of a pairing, as in his opinion their close backstory might provide some good extra justification). From what I can gather. He’s gone on to clarify that pairing was just an example and basically he feels children’s media just needs more representation in general.
I’m guessing originally it was more an expressed opinion that the show and society would benefit from greater representation, more than him aggressively pushing the idea for pony specifically, but at this point the issue’s blown up so big all over the place (and as you can see from the tweets capped above he isn’t the sort of person to just stop responding to continuing provocation) so now it’s possibly turning into something more.
So he wants to add it to the comic or show? I’m guessing the show because that’s why everyone’s pissed at him.
But he does the comics, does he have any real say for the show?
Edited
He is a comic writer. He’s not trying to make FlutterDash specifically canon in the show, he said it was an example and suggested it at a writer’s panel at a con as he thinks more representation would be good in FIM given the nature of the show.
You can tell that to him if you want, I really don’t really care what they do at this point, I have enough shipping fuel to satisfy me whether or not they make anything canon.
And wait, is he trying to make FlutterDash canon in the show? I thought he was a comic writer.
Edited
You need to tell that first part to Jeremy here. Maybe add in “Hasbro needs to sell this series in places where an implied homosexual relationship means a the franchise being banned there” or something. I’m sure you’d get plenty of moaning about how bad that is even though he has his own comic series where he can do whatever he wants.
*displayed preference to clarify, since I can’t edit.
Didn’t say that Rarity being bisexual was my assumption, having headcanons on characters’ sexuality is a waste of time honestly. I just like to ship.
But you really have no way of really knowing. If you know a guy who had been in countless relationships with girls and with one guy. Does that mean he’s explicitly straight? Maybe he leans towards one gender over the other, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t have an attraction at all.
