Thank you! A show ending after it lasted this long is a natural end. Likewise we kind of gotten the heads up about when the show would likely end at around 2014. It’s not like the show is abruptly ending and being cut short when it was still young.

If G4 had come to a natural end and G5 was a few years afterwards I wouldn’t be so hard on it. But the fact that G4 is being killed specifically to make way for an immediate reboot makes me bitter. Declining quality can change, but cancelling a series is pretty final in most cases.

This is more or less a natural end for G4, though. The show is already on it’s eighth season, and, if there isn’t any drastic shift in plans, it will go up to nine. This is an impressive amount of time for a TV program to air in general, let alone something like My Little Pony. Other shows made for the same demographic are lucky to last half as long as FiM has. Ending G4 around this time, when it has already created a legacy for itself but interest in it has not been lost, is a logical move. The plans for a reboot did not bring about the plans to end of G4; the plans to end G4 brought about the plans for a reboot.

As for me personally, I am also remaining cautiously optimistic about G5 of MLP. It’s still very early in the process at this point and everything is still subject to change, so I feel drawing conclusions about it now would be premature. After all, you know full well how different FiM is from the original G4 concept art.

@Vinyl Fluff Like what Disney is doing to Marvel and Star Wars? Those films have good reception by critics standards. Yet, in the case of The Last Jedi, fans were split on how the film went. Still, I believe that words are losing their meanings. As in, their definitions are dying. Nobody knows if Star Wars is a space opera anymore, or if MLP: FiM is about what it began as any longer. “I believe that Utopia doesn’t mean “no place anymore.

Everyone knew we would have to eventually move on to G5. Hasbro even said back in 2014 that G4 would go on for another five years. It was the fans that assumed this only referred to the toyline or that it would be extended.

I recognize and acknowledge your points as valid, however you misunderstand why I was asking. I wasn’t asking because I dislike or disrespect what Faust did for the show; I was asking because I don’t understand why someone else couldn’t do the same thing? Or, for that matter, why someone would even have to fight that hard at this point. Hasbro recognizes–and yes this is acknowledged in the e-mails–that a quality show results in far superior toy sales to an inferior show. They know this. They want the show to be good.
That means it won’t be necessary for someone to fight super hard this time; I have high hopes that G5 will be excellent.

The problem is that recognizing something and actually not screwing it up are two different things. As I mentioned earlier the Hasbro execs were actually giving themselves credit for the show’s early popularity, even while Faust was still on board. Executives are often out-of-touch.

Meghan McCarthy being attached to G5 is the ONLY thing keeping me from writing it off as guaranteed trash. We can see how the last couple of seasons have dipped in quality, with fewer and fewer original staff remaining on the show. Writers aren’t even required to actually know anything about the show before writing scripts now (one said that it’s “suggested” that they watch a few episodes but not everyone does it) and we get episodes which smack of prior episode rehashed, forgotten character development, and some downright bad episodes.

I’m curious as to why Faust is the be-all-end-all of pony to some people.

She’s not the be-all, end-all but she attempted to keep Hasbro from ruining the show and turning it into an obnoxious 22-minute long toy commercial like so many shows are. She fought to protect the show as much as she could. If not for her the show would’ve turned out to be another forgettable girl’s cartoon (just with an established franchise), would’ve done nothing special nor garnered any real attention, and would’ve be cancelled at the required 65 episodes for syndication and we wouldn’t be here discussing it.

Read the interviews with her. See what she had to say about how she was tired of girl’s entertainment being tripe and what she wanted to do to change that.

She is responsible for the show being done the way it was, and what attracted older fans. Regardless of what you think of her today, if you’re a fan of the show you owe her a debt of gratitude.

I’m curious as to why Faust is the be-all-end-all of pony to some people. I mean, yeah, she had great ideas, but she’s not the only person in the world capable of being creative. Megan McCarthy is the primary person in charge of developing G5 and I’ve found her work consistently likable and good on the show; she’s been responsible for a lot of the great things it has done.

What the Fluff?
@Vinyl Fluff
No, it was being hit by the meddling before that.

Yes, I’m fully-aware of the changes Hasbro wanted before the series even started. I’m familiar with the entire development of G4, back to when the concept sketches Faust had on her dA page suddenly disappeared one day, after she was asked to head the project up, and was trying to hide the new project. I also know why some of those executive decisions were made. Queen Celestia didn’t happen because Disney has long established that queens are “evil” and it’s the princesses that are good. It’s a pop-culture trope and Hasbro didn’t want Celestia to be incorrectly assumed to be evil. As for the other changes, I’m aware of them, too. What you’re leaving out is that some of the changes were the result of the development process itself. Not everything was the result of Hasbro calling them up and going “Drop this idea.”

the show was originally going to have more action based episodes per season. There’s probably even more than this but this is just me listing things on the top of my head.

This is a myth Faust herself dispelled. I don’t have the link off-hand but she answered this and said it had become like an internet version of the phone tag game, where someone said something, and it gets repeated by multiple people until the original statement is completely changed.

Yeah, it wouldn’t be a bad thing for some. You can say that about any character being removed from the show.

Point was, don’t state something like a universal fact when it’s a wholly subjective opinion. Personally, I could’ve done with a few less CMC episodes.

You seem to love Faust and her decisions a lot. She loved the Cutie Mark Crusaders and had she gotten her way, she would have even given them their own spin-off series.

I’m a fan, yes. But that does not mean I have to agree with everything she did nor follow every notion she has. She also loved Firefly and used her personality as the basis for G4’s Rainbow Dash. But Dash isn’t my favorite character. Far from it, it fact. Her love of the CMC and me being a fan of her work are independent of one another.

It would be rather stupid and sexist if they did that. I’m not denying that what they did with Celestia’s earlier toys wasn’t an example of that. Thankfully we got more show accurate toys of her and Luna down the line, so now I can just look back at the pink toy Celestias and laugh.

I still occasionally see purple Luna merch, and they’ve also done something similar with Chrysalis. Her (rare) merch is done in a greyish tone rather than actual solid black like she actually is. I guarantee you it’s because they, once again, think she won’t sell in her true color.

But sexism isn’t anything foreign to the Transformers franchise either. It just usually manifested in the idea of, “Female robots? Boys don’t want to play with those!

I’m also fully aware of the history of fembots in Transformers.

The dumb color coding and huge focus on gender norms isn’t even a problem exclusive to Hasbro. It’s a toy industry problem in general. They’ve been steadily fixing that kind of mindset though.

Never said it was exclusive to them. But that doesn’t change my point. G4 had the protection of Faust as it was developed. She tried her hardest to keep them from meddling as much as possible. G5 won’t have that protection. It’ll be endlessly screwed with as the marketing heads see fit.

G4 already had its groundwork laid down by Lauren Faust before the excessive meddling began. This is, again, what people seem to be missing in my point here. G4 suffered from executive meddling after it was already established and had already become a hit. G5 will be Executive Meddling: The Cartoon right from the beginning.

No, it was being hit by the meddling before that. Before the first episode even aired even. Queen Celestia never happened, Prince Blueblood isn’t a Duke, an episode focusing on Big Mac was cut, sapient deer were supposed to have a role in the show (some of which even adopted a pony) but that also never happened, Viking based animals were a concept at one point, Sea Ponies were supposed to appear, the monsters in the show had their designs drastically changed, the earlier seasons were going to have a bit more of a even gender ratio in background ponies, ponies having more varied body types didn’t happen at first (but we thankfully started to get that once later seasons rolled along), and while the show was always going to have slice of life episodes, the show was originally going to have more action based episodes per season. There’s probably even more than this but this is just me listing things on the top of my head.

@Vinyl Fluff
That wouldn’t be a bad thing for some of us.

Yeah, it wouldn’t be a bad thing for some. You can say that about any character being removed from the show. I have a friend who despises Pinkie Pie with every fiber of her being and I’m sure she and a lot of people would like it if she wasn’t in the show at all. But at the same time, I’m sure a lot of fans would also hate if such a decision were made because they love Pinkie as a character and enjoy the episodes she was in (one of which was funnily enough, another friend of mine).

Getting rid of the Cutie mark crusaders means any cute sisterly interactions and episodes that they had with the older ponies are gone and it also means some of the well loved episodes that had Luna in them acting as a guide for them would have also not happened.

You seem to love Faust and her decisions a lot. She loved the Cutie Mark Crusaders and had she gotten her way, she would have even given them their own spin-off series.

@Vinyl Fluff
This isn’t simply show vs. toy accuracy. What if Hasbro decided that all Decepticon toys had to be in shades of red and blue with no purple whatsoever, because purple isn’t traditionally seen as a “boy’s color” and they didn’t think anyone would buy the toys? That’s what Hasbro was doing.

It would be rather stupid and sexist if they did that. I’m not denying that what they did with Celestia’s earlier toys wasn’t an example of that. Thankfully we got more show accurate toys of her and Luna down the line, so now I can just look back at the pink toy Celestias and laugh.

But sexism isn’t anything foreign to the Transformers franchise either. It just usually manifested in the idea of, “Female robots? Boys don’t want to play with those! Don’t make toys of female robots, even if they appeared in the show. Female robots don’t make sense anyways but male ones do obviously.Have a read and see.

The dumb color coding and huge focus on gender norms isn’t even a problem exclusive to Hasbro. It’s a toy industry problem in general. They’ve been steadily fixing that kind of mindset though.

For example, some places that sell toys have gotten rid of the blue and pink isles and have simply said “toys are toys.” The local Wal-Mart I go to used to have a blue isle for “boy toys” and a pink isle for “girl toys” years ago but for the past two or three years, all the toy isles have “boy toys” and “girl toys” in them and the isles aren’t color coded or labeled by gender anymore.

Another example would be recent toy ads. I’ve seen quite a few toy ads, a lot of which were for Hasbro toys, that had both girls and boys playing with the toys together. They had ads with a boy playing with a baby doll, a toy oven, and with cute stuffed animals which were traditionally “girls toys.” Likewise I’ve seen ads with girls playing with toy guns and swords and Star Wars toys which were traditionally “boys toys.”

And while I don’t recall Mattel having any Barbie ads that had boys playing with them, a lot of the more recent Barbie ads have been focusing less on shopping and more on the fact that Barbie has a huge variety of jobs, all of which are inspiring to young girls.

These are steps in the right direction if you ask me.

Look, I get what you’re saying but Executive Meddling happens with a ton of shows, movies, and other forms of art. It’s unfortunate that it happens sometimes but despite Executive Meddling, a lot of shows, movies, etc. still end up being just fine. Case in point, G4 of MLP. The show was still able to succeed despite all the stuff you brought up. Those two Transformers series I brought up to you earlier also had a ton of Executive Meddling involved in them, but they also managed to turn out well despite that. Also not all Executive Meddling is bad. If it weren’t for Executive Meddling, the Cutie Mark Crusaders wouldn’t exist.

What the Fluff?
@Vinyl Fluff
If Transformers Animated and Transformers Prime could do a full reboot from scratch successfully without continuing from a previous series, then I don’t see why the same can’t possibly happen to MLP’s G5.
The fact you’re comparing it to G3.5 is kind of hilarious, especially considering the G5 leaks seem to imply that they might even be trying to aim for an older audience compared to G4. G3 and G3.5 was aimed at really young children. It had little to no conflict and was pretty much just something super cutesy an adult can put on to distract their toddlers.

You missed the point of the comparison with Gen 3.5. It’s an example of what can happen when Hasbro marketing is holding the reins. G4 turned out the way it did because Lauren Faust wanted to do something worthwhile and held off the Hasbro meddling as long as she could. G5 won’t have that kind of genesis. It’ll be subject to the whims of out-of-touch Hasbro execs who previously gave themselves the credit for G4’s popularity (and yes, early investor phone calls had them doing just that.)

Am I saying G5 will literally turn into a remake of 3.5? Of course not. But it’s the product of executive meddling and it will suffer from that same meddling its entire life.

Let me remind you these are the same people who insisted Celestia’s toys be pink and Luna’s toys be purple because they thought they wouldn’t sell otherwise. The same people who tried to get Luna written out of the show because they thought she was “too scary” for the target audience.

Think about all of that, and how a series under the direct control of those kind of people will be like. We can see all the early concept artwork we like, and read leaked discussions about villains, but that doesn’t mean the end product won’t be distilled down to a 22-minute show that was designed by committee based purely on Hasbro’s marketing department.

And G4 will have been killed so it could be replaced with that.

G5 already has at least one villain planned in the stages for it (which means, there’s likely going to stories with adventure and conflict in it). And a lot of the concept art I’ve seen of it seemed to be rather creative and didn’t aim for the lazy overly safe and sacchrine route. I doubt they’d try to make a theatrical film for G5 if there wasn’t some effort being involved in the project. (They could have gone for a straight to DVD or TV movie for that.)

I’m not saying G5 is going to be perfect, but at this early stage of development acting like it’s going to be horrible and the end of the franchise seems a bit drastic to me. I’m cautiously optomisitc for now. Until we get more solid infomation (like a trailer, which likely isn’t going to happen until 2019 or 2020), I’m not going to reject the idea of this series. And even if it ends up being bad and I don’t like it, I won’t bother the new fans. I’ll still be happy with G1 and G4. The old stuff’s not going away and can still be cherished.

Good grief it’s not supposed to be a G4 redux. It’s going to be a completely different take, meaning it will have its own mythos to build on. This isn’t going to be Equestria. This is going to be something quite a bit different.
Also: I like the inclusion of fangs because now I can’t not picture these new ponies as omnivores. Yum yum yum delicious bacon.

That’s the point. They’re ending the current successful show to reboot it from scratch. Likely because some Hasbro managers think they can capture lightning in a bottle twice, and what we’ll end up with is a shell of the current franchise where everything is dictated by Hasbro’s marketing.

You know, like how we ended up with garbage like Gen 3 and 3.5.
