the song (to me like every other song in the show) was unneeded but the G3 ponies were pretty good, at least they unlike the other readers of the book actually learned something instead of bickering over the littlest of details a lot of which have little to nothing to do with the point of the book.
Yes, it was. Only good thing to come out of the episode according to fan consensus were the G3 fillies, and those were pretty much just there for trademark renewal. Maybe the song? I dunno…

It all depends on how well it works in the context of the story. If including a fan idea or concept into the story makes the story worse, then it is bad. If it has no negative impact on the story, then it is fine. For example, making “cupcakes” Canon would be an awful idea, because it goes against the tone of the show and would be completely out of character. On the other hand, slice of life was great.
For me personally, it depends on how often it is done. I don’t think that MLP has overdone it at all really.

Well, there were a few OCs that got in. Some were OCs of crew members or their kids, and at least three of them were OCs of fans of the show who got in with the help of the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
OC and Mary Sue have become the most misused fandom terms I’ve ever seen. At this point, I hate it when anyone even brings them up as criticism of a show/game/book/fanfic etc. because 99% of the time they are used wrong.
