It technically is considering they showed up in the comics first and were then referenced in the show.
You better mention King Vorak or FS&RD’s flight camp reunion. With Pillars, I’m pretty sure show staff just sent IDW all needed data, so it’s not a reference to comics.
They aren’t completely separate however, as the show itself does reference the comic on more than one occasion, particularly with the Pillars of Equestria.
That’s still stupid. If the show and the comic have their canons separate, then neither of them should be able to tell the other “no, you’re wrong, that didn’t happen”.

To be fair, the show also contradicts itself in numerous instances.

At the moment, the series has its own separate Canon oh, if the show references it then it’s official, if it contradicts it, then it’s not. I can only assume this is how it’s going to go for a season 10 onwards in the comics
I’m not complaining, per se, ‘cause it doesn’t matter to me, as I don’t read the MLP comics.
But if you’re watching or reading a series that runs over a span of years, I think it’s incredibly asinine to have to keep in mind that the events of the current installment may or may not even be canon and you won’t be able to tell what is and isn’t until it’s referenced in future content that also may or may not be canon.

That would make sense if show jossed previous comic. In this case, show neither confirmed nor denied it, so it doesn’t make sense if comic itself is tearing it’s own continuity apart.
