If we take the multiverse theory into account tho, technically, everything is canon.

Comics were never canon. They’re a separate timeline or Universe.

Well, yes. In the Marvel Universe, Earth-616 is the mainstream continuity so it is not canon to the Ultimates universe and vise versa but Earth-1610(Ultimates) is it’s own continuity thus its own canon.

Same! Everything’s canon in it’s own way. Hence, reader’s interpretation. But at some point, continuity is THAT important anyway.

Well, we take the concept of the Multiverse from DC and Marvel then it’s all canon really.

To be fair, I don’t think it’s as significant a difference in appearance as say Moondancer.

I like the show design better, but I’m just happy to see them cannon and in the end both can be cannon just change the look

I think that by the time of this tweet the episode was already in storyboarding phase and the designs (general appearance, colors, cutie marks) had been established.

I think she meant body designs. She could’ve sent them a description of what their cutie marks look like. He said they know what their cutie marks are, not that they had an image of them.

But she’s not a character designer. She probably came up with the design for their cutie marks and shared it with both the show’s staff ahd the comic artists.

Those two were the writers for the chapter books. I bet they’re saying that they designed their cutie marks when they came up with the characters, but they didn’t have any full design yet.

 
After digging up this conversation, it sounds like the show designs for the aunts may predate the comic designs (and weren’t shared for whatever reason).

Agreed, Sombra’s not an Umbra or reformed, Celestia never made portals with Starswirl after her sister was banished, and Moondancer was a shutin who is the same age as Twilight, these are all superflourus, but is the story GOOD? Like Nightmarity isn’t canon, but its better than Spike At Your Service. Reflections isn’t canon and its worse than this recent episode with the sisters. The medium doesn’t dictate if its a good story. You could argue consistency is vital to a good story, but consistent to character and logic is more important than events sometimes. If Winter-wrap-up came immediately after a summer episode it would be more consistent than Non-Compete-Clause. Story being good will always be more important.
