@LuminoZero: In the FE13 Falchion’s case, it doesn’t seem like a hole given how it glows. Possibly a thin glass layer, or something made from a Divinestone fragment, that glows green whenever the power of the one whose fang was used to forge Falchion in the first place has her power invoked by its current user.

The explanation they gave for the discrepancy is that only the blade is ageless and unbreakable. The rest of the sword, not so much.
 
Not sure how that explains the hole in the middle, however.
