taking a look at appledash & canon for pride month! collecting relevant staff/VA/even merch stuff (that last part is for fun, tbh) in the above collage to make things e-z. plus the parting shot the show leaves us with, for emphasis. what do you think? i think it’s a pretty obvious setup as shown in the 15-20 year time skip finale, and the script leaks line up with that.

first thing’s first, note that lauren faust (who hasn’t worked on the show since season 2) never said “dash isn’t a lesbian.” that’s a misquote from a 2010 article that was a rebuttal to a blogger who called MLP racist/sexist/homophobic. what lauren said was it’s unfair to both straight tomboys and lesbian tomboys to assume she is solely because she’s a tomboy.

as for big jim saying it’s “up to interpretation”, let’s establish he also has a ton of quotes suggesting his dislike for shipping, derpibooru doesn’t even quite host them all. he is also on record for saying lyra and bonbon were just friends for some 5 years…

but the poor guy was subject to some nasty fan treatment, maybe going soft on the finale shipping reduces headaches. but it’s been a long time since the finale and everyone’s jets have cooled by now. that also links to why i think vogel made some ‘softening’ suggestions and helped jim save face for his statement. meanwhile, mike myhre is an infrequent twitter user (account made in 2012, only 2k tweets) and likely wasn’t privy to the extent of the drama, hence his directness.

what? Rarijack has flaws to (I ship it so this isn’t bias) mainly being the contrasting personalities on both ends and the arguments/disagreements we see in the show
that’s like saying lyra and bon-bon or cranky and matilda or shining and cadance or scootaloo’s aunts or any of the characters parents or aren’t married or that flash and twilight or flash and sunset or sci-twi and timber or sci-twi and flash or rarity and spike to a degree or wiz kid and curly winds weren’t ship teasing, it’s factually incorrect here. Appledash is implied, lyrabon is canon, cranky & matilda are canon, shiningdance is canon, flashlight is somewhat canon (due to ship teasing), flashset is semi-canon, sciflash was teased and never elaborated on, wizwinds was implied. timbertwi is somewhat implied to be canon, scootaloo’s aunts are married, brightbutter/hondocrumbles/nightvelvet/windyhoof/gentleposey/carrotcup/maneshutter etc. are canon move om.
Appledash don’t work too, just like soarindash. Two similar tomboys with the eternal urge to compete will not get along together and will kill each other within a week. Otherwise you have to break their personalities and then they wouldn’t be RD and AJ anymore, just two boring faded copies of them.
Rarijack is closer to be canon than any other AJ ship at least because of all their moments together in the series, and their chemistry is perfectly demonstrated without destroying their personalities

If you don’t like a ship, then don’t like it, that is alright. The only REALLY set canon characters are Pinkie-cheese and Big mac with the mare whose name I keep forgetting.. everything else is Technically canonically implied.

I’ll lay it on ya. Here goes.
That’s likely as far as Hasbro allowed them to go: showing them being especially close, suggesting they live together, leave/travel together, and share responsibilities, all in their precious few seconds/minutes of their screentime in the time skip that sets up this “where are they now?” segment. Dash is implied to have achieved a high rank as a wonderbolt, AJ is suggested to be the partner of Dash (they went out of their way to show that Mac has the kids, and not AJ). After that scene, AJ also spoke for Dash, which is totally a couple thing. Them being a couple was not the entre point of the episode, just a minor part. You do realize they weren’t allowed to specifically say Aunt Holiday and Auntie Lofty were a couple either outside of tweets right? No pet names, no blushing, no saying they’re an item, only having them live together and touch each other once, just like AJ and Dash.
As for Lyra and Bonbon, they’re minor characters whose only big speaking role was in the episode where they kept calling each other best friends (of course I know they were being shipped, but the only reason it stood to air was because they could still be read as friends). Scoots’ aunts (one-offs) and Lyra and Bonbon are certainly held to different standards of “playing it safe” than the highly visible main characters/face of one of Hasbro’s most important long running IPs.
The proposal was 2 seconds long, without dialogue, in a rumbling action scene with a rushing crowd, and took up only a tiny part of the background. The proposal was not written in the script. The animators stuck it in, and might even be a case of sneaking something past the radar, it’s something that 99% of fans won’t see. Almost no one caught it on live reactions to the episode, you’d have to hang around the fandom to catch wind of it. Just like AJ and Dash, Lyra and Bonbon could still be read as friends up until the finale because they do as all friends who are mares do: walk next to each other, do things together, etc, nothing explicit, just subtext we know is intentional thanks to that being their fandom fame (read: external, outside the show).
Actual episode only has them and walk in and talk about helping with chores.

Maybe because nothing in this picture changes what happened in the actual episode?
… I feel like they’re just as likely to be purely headcanon. And that they’ve become much more obnoxious about insisting on it. It’s kinda like furries, waxing and waning over time (with regards to how everyone else sees them) based on how annoying the community currently is.

I’m pretty sure shippers shipping everyone with anyone has been a facet of Internet fandom since forever, or at least with FiM. The only difference is nowadays, there’s a chance that same-sex pairings could be legitimate and not purely in the realm of headcanon. About time.
Actually, it’s less about being a shipper and more about getting fed up with shippers in recent years. On some level it feels like characters aren’t even allowed to be friends anymore; some people are just obsessively compulsive about deciding that everybody is sleeping with everybody else.
I admit it’s a pet peeve. It didn’t used to bother me, but it also didn’t used to be so prevalent.
So you’re a salty shipper all along lol! Whatevs, carry on. I stand by all M6 ship combinations being very good and feasible. Closing note: two decades is a long time, a lot can happen especially if the tight friend group physically drifts apart and two of them (AJ and Dash) find themselves hanging out a lot more often—this is the case that S9 established before the time skip, that Dash’ll be hanging around the barn a lot more because of the Granny gang business.

However, you are correct that I still think making them a couple is dumb and not believable at all. Rarijack, sure, they practically drown you in hints for that… but nothing Dash and AJ ever did came off as anything more than “close friends and rivals.”
I just think it’s dumb. That’s my opinion.
The script leak is legitimate. It originated from a server leak that included official flash assets and other material from the show, which are massive files so the torrent is over 800 GB. Also included are internal emails, be they between MLP FiM staff members, or from and to Hasbro themselves. The script leak coincides with what we saw in the show, and correlates with what the director said: appledash was written as a couple, meaning the dialogue and inference, again, is all in the script. Them going from awesome best friends to an awesome couple is different conversation I doubt you want to have.
