I kinda also headcanoned that, but it’s due to Luna going Nightmare mode and brainwashing many batpony-nation soldiers to be hers, and afterwards all were ostracized out of Equestria where many starved to death because the eternal night killed most of the crops.
Well in my head-canon, only a few actually serve Luna, the rest resent her with a passion.
(This is because Luna, seeing the usefullness of the vamp-ponies, spirited some children away and brainwashed them into serving her.)
My headcanon is that they were actually descended from dragons by some Dragon overlord/mad scientist that wanted a race of shock troops to conquer ponies. They rebelled and killed their ruler, and then Luna found them and hired them because they look like bats and are cool. They’re omnivores and can live for millennia due to being dragon hybrids.
I head-canoned them to be descended from pegasi/changeling hybrids. Over a few centuries, they’ve become there own race. Most living in Germane.
Cutest vampires I’ve ever seen.
We have some agreed-upon head canon of them. Basically, they’re nocturnal, can use echolocation by clicking their tongues during the night, may have slight Romanian accents, talk using bad bat puns, and it seems everybody is divided between them being omnivores or vegetarians. Personally, I label them as fruit bats who have the option to snack on blood.

…I am still conflicted on what Bat Ponies really are (variant of pegasus, specially enchanted night guards made to be nocturnal, or new species all together)
