Well at least now I know why Spike is smirking. It’s because of you guys and your petty (lol) debate. Spike as a dog worked, and that’s enough for me.

You make a good point, but they could have still preserved his “outsider” label by having him be a human too.

After all, him being younger, not an element of harmony, and being the opposite sex of the other main characers, probably would’ve been enough in EQG. But again, if he was a normal boy, twilight wouldn’t have proof that she was from another dimension.

I think part of the reasoning for making him a dog was preserving his “outsider” status. I’ll have to check my copy to be sure, but I think it was Meghan McCarthy who wrote in the Elements of Harmony guidebook that she saw his being an outsider to be a key part of who he is.

If it makes you feel any better, the writers didn’t make him a dog because they see him as a pet. If anything, they turned him into a dog, simply because they needed something as physical evidence that twilight is from another world.

If spike the boy tried to back-up twilight’s story, no one would believe her. But once spike the DOG talks, they believe her. It was only done as a plot convience.

Still though, spike is awesome, no matter what species.

Yeah, I suppose. Him being a dog definitely had a purpose. But I still feel it was degrading to him. It implied that he is just a pet to Twilight, rather then her oldest and most trusted friend, or a little brother or even son type figure.
