I think acceptance comes down to execution.
 
I think volume is more positive than negative, as long as the quality is there. Great art is most helpful but it can also hurt an OC, especially if the the image would otherwise be liked better without them in it, such is the case here.
 
Shipping with one of the Mane 6 is a death sentence, as Ive not seen any Ocs really break that barrier. First one I remember trying is Skywind, who didn’t last very long due it being a self insert. Mary-sue ism tends to be a big downfall for those who arn’t a self insert but still ship with the one of the Mane 6 or other canon ponies.
 
Getting tons of commissions hurts an OC (I think) but how you get them seems to matter a lot more. I wouldn’t recommend alternative methods other than the standard commission.
 
This is my opinion on these types of issues.

hmm, well I’d guess that the staff members’ OCs being popular has to do with them being the SIs of the people that actually make the show, and them not really interacting with the characters in any capacity. as for the other OCs you mentioned they have little to no interaction with the main cast, and/or they follow the rule of cute. also, they have imperfections that are clearly visible, unlike many mary sue type OCs.

Then explain why people love fluffle puff, snowdrops, fausticorn, Tara’s OC and other non canon GOOD OC’s more than BG ponies? (Besides, even an obscure BG pony doesn’t count as an OC since they’re canon)

The best OCs are the ones who are actually canon. Hear me out on this: Take a super-ultra background pony, if you can’t find one you like without a name then one with a name and nothing else. Then give them a name/talent/etc related to their cutie mark, what they did in their one scene, etc. Then after that you can start personalizing them. They fit in canon perfectly despite you having almost all control.

For me Ticket at that moment was totally unknown. When the great flood came i somewhat learned to hate ticket. Not because of the oc itself, but because it was freaking everywhere.
