It wouldn’t be a bad thing, to have one writer that knows how to write for Pinkie. But keep in mind how talented AKR was as she also wrote Filli Vanilli and Crusaders of the Lost Mark; AKR had a good working knowledge across the major cast. For GMB, having to have written all of the chapter books for Mane 6 + Princesses and now others will probably help in the future, but she at least knows how to approach Pinkie well.
Of course, there was still a “and then there’s Rarity” gag which works once in a while (as it did in this ep) but has become a go-to for many of the writers and too easy to fall into.
Well, I’m not saying the episode was perfect either. It wasn’t deep. It was a humor driven episode, rather than a character one. I had a few gripes here and there, especially with how little Cadance was given to do in this episode {she’s one of my favorite characters}, but it never amounted to much.
While this isn’t going to be an always fact of Pinkie, I’m glad we’re getting a few straight comedy works here and there to splice up the show. I just couldn’t stop laughing and reminding myself why I loved Pinkie Pie so much.
@Fwelin
Don’t get me wrong, it was not a bad episode, it wasn’t a bad Pinkie episode, it was just an episode that felt different from the typical comedy-driven stories, having more of its DNA from Looney Tunes than most other episodes. It’s a different style of humor that the show typically uses. Far from bad, just different.
But the episode only had a single real fourth wall joke, and another joke that might be a super minor fourth wall joke.
I thought it was a brilliant use of Pinkie’s character. She wasn’t stupid, out of character, nor was it forced. It wasn’t a deep episode by any means, but it was a great comedy. I’ve seen the show, every episode, and I would say that, again, this feels at home here. I don’t see why this, or Party Pooped, are ‘exceptions’ or ‘use it too much’ in regards to physics and such when it comes to Pinkie.
It is not so much that she does them, but this was “Pinkie Pie antics, the episode”, making it feel more Looney Tunes, which is not bad comedy but out of style for MLP. The occassional 4th wall breaking is fine, but this ep felt like a full string of them, and that’s tiring. Even “Too Many Pinkie Pies” keep much of Pinkie’s actions rooted in the physics of their world, and judiciously used cartoon articles at the right times.
It would be the same as having an entire episode of “And then there’s Rarity” non-sequitors (like the newspaper gag). One or two an ep works, a full ep does not.
Anyway, I thought this episode was a nice breather after last week’s rollercoaster.

Overly cartoon antics? Actually, they fit well with the world. Why? Season 1, Pinkie Pie broke the fourth wall and did quite a few Looney Toon esque and fits perfectly with her character, so I really don’t see why this complaint is being lobeyed against her now when she’s been doing stuff for seasons.
Two other things that seemed off were the odd flashbacks (which while the show has used before, felt very Simspons/Family Guy in terms of comedy), and the overly cartoon antics - PP is random yes, but a lot did feel a bit out of place for the world they built. Not terribly bad, mind you, but definitely a disconnect with other episodes.
…huh.
I think you nailed it. I think it was needing a lesson, and it was missing. It needed something for the audience to mull over afterwards.
I dunno, maybe I’m just too used to s02’s “Aesop realization every episode” thing.
Yeah I suppose that would be a sticking point. I’m just suprised since, aside from the Mac two parter and the Chrysalis story, it’s pretty much the only arc I’ve not heard a number of people decry as the worst in the comics run.
Saw a couple scans here and there, giving me the general gist of what the plot was. Then I saw the bit where the other Mane 5 blame Twilight for what happened (even though THEY were the ones screwing around with the stories)… and are presented as being in the right.
Well, that, and I’ve at least seen plenty of people who liked Reflections. I’ve barely seen anybody say anything good about the Bookworm arc other than the ponified character cameos.
I won’t spoil it but I think your enjoyment will hinge upon whether you agree to one person’s actions are understandable. It’s the biggest bone of contention more so than any wasted potential.
I’m curious as to why you’d exclude that out of everything. Not that it was a masterpiece but it’s not the first story I’d expect someone to specifically point out.
In fact, if I ever get a chance to binge on all the comics I’ve missed, the only ones I will definitely be skipping are the two issues of the Bookworm arc.
I haven’t read the Reflections arc in full (in fact, the only arc I’ve ever read in full was the first arc with Chrysalis; I’m like super far behind, to the point that the amount of the comic I’ve read hasn’t changed in like a year and a half), but from what I’ve heard about it, I probably actually would enjoy it.
I think the biggest thing that gets the fandom into an uproar is wasted potential. It happened in Equestria Games and now with Reflections. Even if the arcs were decent, because the fandom goes wild with ideas that if it went in a different direction, the fans would harp on what we didn’t get; in a broad sense.
(BTW, I thought Reflections was okay.)
People will complain no matter what. This fandom has taught me that.
(I liked Reflections, flaws and all.)
Besides, the comic writers come up with tons of ideas that I found quite clever and creative. (Granted, they’re allowed to do scenarios the show can’t or won’t do. You know, like focus on Celestia and what not.)
And some’d still complain. Even those who liked Reflections… Well, maybe just its writers’ previous storylines. <_<;
Now, to get some of the comic writers….Yeah, it’d be interesting.
Perhaps not, but the whole “Gilda trying to corrupt Twilight” thing just strikes me as rather odd.
You’re right; it wouldn’t affect it.
Also, nothing you wrote about her counts as a “continuity goof-up”.
