Oh, yeah. That’s right. Luna asked Celestia why she invited Discord. Celestia said that it wouldn’t be very exciting if he wasn’t there.

I agree. It’s like everyone ignores the fact that these ponies saved Equestria a dozen times and wield the most powerful magic known to Equestria and are Celestia’s chosen problem-solvers. It’s hard to buy at times.

And yeah, I like that scene. Any guard that works on the castle would logically know who Twilight is for one reason or another. She is often there on duty for Celestia.

Yet, the ponies of Equestria don’t seem to care if they irk Twilight. I know this show wouldn’t have as much conflict if ponies knew they were messing with the protege of their immortal ruler and the bearers of pretty much the most sacred talismans in Equestria, but sometimes, it goes from ‘understandably pushed aside’ to ‘it never happened’ with the others mentaility.

The closest we got to really mentioning or focusing on that aspect was ‘It’s About Time’ where that night guard instantly recognizes Twilight and lets her in. That was funny and a good nod to her past.

She wasn’t social, but she probably is the second with most common sense after Applejack. And she has proper etiquette as we’ve seen during both galas.

And yes, I would agree ponies would be aware of her, at least those native to Canterlot like you said. Plus, being Celestia’s protegé seems to have caused her family to have ties with the princess, considering where her brother ended up.

The show tends to forget that Twilight grew up in Canterlot, the big city. I would think ponies would be aware of her, at least those native to Canterlot. She was Celestia’s student for years. The upper crust would have made it their mission to get to know Twilight for either personal or just formal reasonings.

I can get by with Twilight’s behavior, since she was a shut in. Though, I can’t see the nobles getting that agitated with Twilight because they know that getting on Twilight’s bad side is like ticking off Celestia herself.

I agree. The mane cast was made to behave ridiculously in ways that weren’t in character (okay maybe Pinkie, but not anyone else) to drive the point home.

Not to mention how the episode conveniently forgets that Twilight IS from Canterot and raised there. Being the princess’ student, and knows how to behave in formal events.

Some people think they did it deliberately to teach Rarity a lesson, but I don’t believe that. And no, it wouldn’t be the same thing as Mare-Do-Well. MDW didn’t ruin Rainbow Dashes heroics, she merely did her own alongside of her. Rainbow’s ego just couldn’t take the competition.

Why was Applejack pulling out those flowers? That never made sense to me. I mean, Applejack has, for the most part, great common sense. She’s usually the one that has to be the straight pony to the other character’s zaniness.
Why didn’t she realize that this wasn’t that type of party? I mean, it was obvious and yet she acted kind of out of character there.

And yeah, I would get upset over it to. I mean, the other characters crashed a party and pretty much either made them uncomfortable or ruined some events. Actually, that ending was similar to ‘The Best Night Ever’ in that regard, but in said gala episode, it was more in character for them to act those ways and it got out of hoof quickly. Here, they were a tad flanderized to prove a point.

I loved that episode, but that part kind of irks me a tad bit.

@Xamrin
Vilifying? I disagree. That’s because so many folks are trained to look at everything not ‘down to earth’ as snobby and therefore wrongbad.

Remember the things Rarity did in Canterlot.
She was invited to a Wonderbolts derby.
She was invited to a gallery opening.
She was invited to a theatre perfomance.
She was invited to a charity auction.
She was invited to an airship christening.
She was invited to Fancy Pants’ garden party.

Those were all benign, and the ponies who wanted to do those things were all having fun, including Rarity. The Canterlot ponies weren’t appalled by the fact that she had commoner friends but because said commoner friends behaved abysmally. They were rude, self-centred, disruptive, and didn’t care one bit about what anypony else wanted to do. Applejack started pulling out the flowers, for crying out loud. In a garden that doesn’t belong to her.

We’re just inclined to side with them because they’re the main characters, but if you really think about it Fancy Pants would’ve been completely in the right to throw them out.

@PonyPon
It seems pretty obvious when you examine some of the other scenes.

-Pinkie Pie’s dance being frowned upon

-Celestia being uncomfortable when Rarity kisses her feet

-Prince Blueblood (Obviously)

-Luna’s behavior in “Luna Eclipsed”

-Celestia being uncomfortable when the Cakes serve her excessive amounts of tea (And pranking them to lighten the situation)

-Her specifically stating in the “The Best Night Ever” that she invited the Elements of Harmony specifically because they’d liven up the Gala (And then inviting Discord the following year with the same intent)

-The less-than-elegant way she eats cake when she thinks nobody is looking (And the rather specific wording of the headline)

-The way the Canterlot ponies were ready to socially crucify Rarity for having “commoner” friends (Until Fancy-Pants stepped in)

-The way the Canterlot ponies in “Sweet and Elite” only wanted to be around Rarity because it would boost their own popularity (Pretty much the entirety of that episode was vilifying the Canterlot elite)

To be honest there are too many examples for me to list.

I’ve come to the conclusion that after 1,000+ years of these egocentric aristocrats sucking up to her their blatant disingenuity has caused her to hold a bit of disdain for these pretentious ponies who’s only defining characteristic is “have money, be a dick” to the point where when things go wrong for these “high-society” fucks it’s a change of pace that she enjoys both on a level of excitement and a modicum of contempt that I imagine even she wouldn’t want to admit exists.

Even the kind princess doesn’t have enough patience for thousands of years of sycophantic, two-faced, pretentious, pompous, corrupt, greedy, fuck-hacks kissing her ass so hard it feels like a particularly invasive and insatiable leech that she has to tolerate being stuck to her rump.

I dunoo, I think Celestia knew perfectly well that something would happen, she didnt know WHAT would happen, just that something WOULD and looked forward to it. I think the shock she had, was from the chaos that ensued. But this is just my opinion.

@DJDerpy2013
You know, when she invited the main six to the Gala, I don’t think she believed it to get out of hoof so badly. Yes, she had fun with it, but she was honeslty shocked by it too.
Given that it’s Celestia, I’m sure she made up for it to the nobles and everyone else who attended. She doesn’t strike me as the type that would just let them suffer just so she can have fun.

While she knew Discord would try something, it didn’t go all that badly. In fact, everyone got to stay unlike last year once Discord calmed down.
CobaltMoon

That’s always been one of my biggest problems with Best Night Ever. I get that the episode is the classic “snobs vs slobs” type of plot and that “the snobs need to be put in their place” in them, but Celestia actively enjoying that the Mane 6 unintentionally fucked it all up really rubs me the wrong way. Sure Celestia hates it, but what about all the ponies who actually enjoyed the gala being the way it was? It makes her come off as an asshole just because the episode was trying to put down the snobs.

@Foric
The problem is that it’s likely that other ponies enjoy it being “boring and haughty”. Her making it fun could ruin it for others. But her not doing so could also ruin it for others. It’s a lose-lose situation.
