I AM THE GOD OF HELLFIRE AND I BRING YOU FIRE!
S7E10 A Royal Problem; Grade: A
So the Celestia episode everyone’s been banging on about. Honestly I was walking into this prepared to be quite critical and with a fear or two. Not in the sense that I thought the episode was going to be awful or be insulting to Tia fans like myself, I just was wary of them going the easy and not all that interesting route with it. I was honestly expecting something like Dragon Gauntlet; a good episode to me, but an episode that I personally felt like got too much praise as a “great Spike episode”. Was Spike good in it? Yes, but that’s it; just good things. To me a good [insert character] episode should be an episode that encapsulates that character or an aspect of them and to me that includes where such works positively and negatively and the character based reasons why both exist. That’s why I loved episode like Amending Fences, Pinkie Pride, Breezies, Testing Dash, Rarity takes Manehattan, Equestria Games, etc. Hell that includes just about all of the post redemption Starlight episodes since they all encapsulate this to some degree. With that in mind it makes me so glad that this episode wasn’t that; for Tia, for Luna, and for Starlight. With that aside excuse while I eat this episode out.
So delicious. The Sisters’ grievances, Starlight’s role as the non-biased party, Star’s dare to strike out past the status norm for the good of the person (well people) again, the fact that their unwillingness to directly confront each other’s problem steams from the same ideal of their history and their status, the consequences of each other’s failings being very real ones, the perfect illustrations of each other’s job and the character needed stick with it, Day Breaker having her own connections with Tia and just not being Nightmare Moon: UltraSun edition in terms of themeing. ooh it’s so good. Only real negative I have is that the dialogue was usually lacking in some spots. Star’s nightmare, the reconciliation, Luna’s nightmare not even bothering to rhyme despite the fact that it was practically begging for it, etc. The set up and set pieces were great, but I fell like they could’ve thought up more powerful dialogue to match the moments and make the scenes more whole.
Random notes:
Twi’s ballerina spell was both intriguing and disturbing.
I’ve seen those who’ve said that Day Breaker is a worse evilestia name than something like Nightmare Star or Solar Flare; they are off their rocker.
As we learned today evil brought upon by sister angst makes you hammy.
I’ll do the next three tomorrow, I’m burnt out on watch toons today.
