“I kind of felt about her that way a while back when she was given a “dark” past to make her like Luna or Sunset because those characters were kind of popular among fans in their time. Now she’s like being portrayed as mini Twilight.”

Can’t say I agree with the notion. I mean Starlight’s past as presented and re-presented in the Hearthwarming song always just came of as something that’s very personal for Star, but not really dark. Twilight wasn’t all teary eyed about her past, heck Twi’s speech basically was her discrediting it’s hold on present Starlight. Personal moral code as a villain, personal vendetta, personal anguish from a personal event, problems with personally connecting with others, acting on guts and personal opinion alone, etc etc. Way I see that’s quite a bit away from Luna’s and Sunset’s motifs and is far removed from Twilight especially post princess Twi.

So the Celestia episode everyone’s been banging on about. Honestly I was walking into this prepared to be quite critical and with a fear or two. Not in the sense that I thought the episode was going to be awful or be insulting to Tia fans like myself, I just was wary of them going the easy and not all that interesting route with it. I was honestly expecting something like Dragon Gauntlet; a good episode to me, but an episode that I personally felt like got too much praise as a “great Spike episode”. Was Spike good in it? Yes, but that’s it; just good things. To me a good [insert character] episode should be an episode that encapsulates that character or an aspect of them and to me that includes where such works positively and negatively and the character based reasons why both exist. That’s why I loved episode like Amending Fences, Pinkie Pride, Breezies, Testing Dash, Rarity takes Manehattan, Equestria Games, etc. Hell that includes just about all of the post redemption Starlight episodes since they all encapsulate this to some degree. With that in mind it makes me so glad that this episode wasn’t that; for Tia, for Luna, and for Starlight. With that aside excuse while I eat this episode out.
So delicious. The Sisters’ grievances, Starlight’s role as the non-biased party, Star’s dare to strike out past the status norm for the good of the person (well people) again, the fact that their unwillingness to directly confront each other’s problem steams from the same ideal of their history and their status, the consequences of each other’s failings being very real ones, the perfect illustrations of each other’s job and the character needed stick with it, Day Breaker having her own connections with Tia and just not being Nightmare Moon: UltraSun edition in terms of themeing. ooh it’s so good. Only real negative I have is that the dialogue was usually lacking in some spots. Star’s nightmare, the reconciliation, Luna’s nightmare not even bothering to rhyme despite the fact that it was practically begging for it, etc. The set up and set pieces were great, but I fell like they could’ve thought up more powerful dialogue to match the moments and make the scenes more whole.

Random notes:
Twi’s ballerina spell was both intriguing and disturbing.
I’ve seen those who’ve said that Day Breaker is a worse evilestia name than something like Nightmare Star or Solar Flare; they are off their rocker.
As we learned today evil brought upon by sister angst makes you hammy.

I’ll do the next three tomorrow, I’m burnt out on watch toons today.

Would like to see Rarity lose her cool in a high stress situation (bad hair day)and have Spike snap her out of it by smooching her right on the lips, Causing her to swoon into a mushy marsh mellow mess.?????

Oh man that was painful.

The only way I would think Starlight’s story would hold up is if she had mental problems. Lol. It also makes sense that Sunburst wanted to get away from her if you looked at it that way. It answers the question why he didn’t write to her or answered her letters.

Did.. did he ever dislike an episode? I get that his shtick is analyzing from a psychological point of view, but it feels like that’s an excuse he uses to be able to claim any episode was amazing, even the poorly received ones.

What’s wrong with Flurry of Emotions? Twilight was amazingly cute the whole episode to be frank, besides that episode did decrease my dislike over Flurry

I don’t know, I’ve never actually watched any of his reviews despite having been subscribed to him for like 2 years… …Which sums up like 90% of the people I’m subscribed to on Youtube to be perfectly honest.

And he’s overall pretty meh With EQG. Basically if it’s an idea he likes, he’ll be lenient with it where as if he doesn’t, he’ll be far more critical. For instance he complained about the middle section of Discordant Harmony while not giving as much attention to the endcaps so he wasn’t completely sold with that outing

While I’ve come to a similar conclusion sometimes about Dr. Wolf, we have to consider that:
A) Even if something is poorly received, somepeople somewhere liked it.
B) In many cases he does express his dislikes about episodes but by his own personality he down plays it and chooses to focus more on the points (in his case more positive than negative) one can take away from an episode than the literal points you could take away from an episode. To each his own and all that.
C) For us to accept that there are those who dislike something in its entirety then should we not also accept those who end up loving/liking all of something?
D) Perhaps that is just the MO of his videos. I know of a review that makes two reviews, one about the episode by itself and one about the moral and its applications. Naturally the later isn’t as critical as the former can get, but is that so wrong since that isn’t the point? Brony Bible Study’s videos are entirely about analysis the moral in parallel to the good book for that alone is the point.

Kaze ni Nare
Sorry, I just dislike this impression that just because someone tries to look for the good as well as the bad in an episode and doesn’t call it cancerous that that means he blindly loves every episode.
