To be fair American English and British English inspired Japan to take the ABC alphebet. They called it the Romanization of Japan. Basically creating Romanji.

Japans legal documents must have gotten several times easier going from several thousand Kanji to twenty seven letters.

Also, their standard is 48 letters (Haragana and Katagana) and something like 3k kanji respectively. However, its better than memorizing up to 10k kanji symbols just to get a respectable job.

There are a lot of different ways to speak Latin, depending on the time and place. There’s the reconstructed Classical version, if you want to sound like people (probably) did back in Roman times. There’s Ecclesiastical Latin for Catholics, which is heavily influenced by Italian pronunciation. There’s the “traditional English pronunciation”, which mainly survives in loanwords like “gladiator”. There’s a dialect of Latin for almost every language in Europe.

I should have taken Spanish back in school. I foolishly took Latin instead and I can’t remember how to speak it. You don’t often get the chance to practice a dead language.

There’s a notable overlap when you compare two written texts explaining the same thing. Instructives are surprisingly good at giving you a good look at the similarities when written. However they use some weird symbols like ç while spanish is known for the ñ.

But when spoken? It really feels like two words apart. Supposedly Portuguese incorporates aspects from the galician regions from the peninsula, while the hispanic american spanish has some roots in the regions near Andalucia because many explorer came from said ports while mixing up with regional languages, but at this point it’s clear the portuguese and spanish are phonetically divorced in many aspects.
