I don’t think Larson was ever really hated, was he? His biggest controversies were MMC - which everyone knew wasn’t his idea - and Fame and Misfortune - which he quickly and plausibly distanced himself from.

These eras are defined in terms of the effect on the fanbase, not solely the staff makeup. Otherwise, S3, S4, and S5 would all be separate “eras”.

What you have to understand is that there have been at least three distinct and separate fandoms for FiM, because 1. nine years is a longass time and 2. the show has changed writing teams twice and thus dramatically changed the show twice. This leads to many old fans leaving because they don’t like the new direction, and many new fans coming in because they do. Consequently, these different “join dates” have completely different perspectives on the show.
The eras I personally divide the show’s fandom into, based on these changes, are:
The point is that Season 3 sucked, everyone knew it, and nobody is going to gaslight me into thinking that the hate over it never happened by chasing butterflies and nitpicking details.

It’s cute how bronies suddenly develop discretion when they have something to get mad about. Fine, let me expand that poor summary into a grand pontification.

Consequently, these different “join dates” have completely different perspectives on the show.

- Classic: S1~S3
- Larson: S4~S5
- Haber: S6~S9
Season 3 was widely considered the worst season until the beginning of the Haber era, at which point the Larson-Haber wars started and more people appeared who openly hated S4-S5. (Spite is always a factor in popularity polls, mind you.)
Everybody was quite vocal about how bad S3 sucked, at the time.
Season 3’s problems were mostly because, as per the above, it was the first time a really drastic change in staff occurred. Worse still, the change was very abrupt: Faust and Renzetti had left the show on sour terms, and they were still scrambling to establish order while making it. So, the whole thing is a little sloppy. Once they got to Season 4, the new order had been more or less established and the quality picked up a bit.
The biggest letdown was how crappy the villain was. One of the writers or another publicly apologized on Twitter and the team swept Sombra under the rug. Nobody expected him to come back.
Also, Season 3 marks the first time that continuity is given particular attention. With the obvious exception of the pilot, S1 and S2 were designed such that the episodes could be in any order… but of course, any scene where Twilight doesn’t have wings must take place before scenes where she does. This increasing focus on continuity led to an overarching story and more frequent drama of varying quality.
Because of the negativity, the team was wary of invoking Season 3, at least by name. Obviously some things established in it still had to be or should’ve been followed through such as “Twilight has wings lul” and “Discord is a good guy lul” and the Equestria Games arc. Naturally, this meant that some negativity over Season 3 continued after Season 3.
But, all the same, many fans were unhappy with these changes, many fans left, and a bunch of new people whose tastes were more in line with this content came in.
This would happen again once Josh Haber took over.
The point is that Season 3 sucked, everyone knew it, and nobody is going to gaslight me into thinking that the hate over it never happened by chasing butterflies and nitpicking details.

Gosh, I must have missed this while I was there watching it unfold on multiple major sites! 🤔
But yes, the writers apologized on Twitter for beefing Season 3 so bad - specifically, how lame of a villain Sombra was - and just sort of swept it under the carpet for a time. I’m astounded they ever bothered to bring him back, really.
And there was absolutely never any widespread furor over Mare Do Well, lol

Just my analysis. I admit NCC being pre-pilot is quite extreme, but Stare Master is the only other episode where I remember the CMC being babied like that (And this is coming from someone who hasn’t watched Season 1)(STWOM doesn’t count as that’s the actual conflict of the episode)

What’s MMDW?? Mysterious Mare Do Well??
If so: No I don’t, because it was never widely considered “the worst”. It had criticism absolutely, but Feeling Pinkie Keen remained the #1 most hated by far until Luna Eclipsed and both were dwarfed by… basically all of Season 3. Season 3 was so despised the writers publicly apologized and pretended it didn’t happen for about the next 3 years.
What’s that? “What’s wrong with Luna Eclipsed”? Nothing - now that we’ve had seven years of Canon Luna. Back then, Luna’s only previous appearance was in her little bitty woobie form in the pilot, and there was an ocean of fanfics and “headcanons” based on that one appearance. Canon Luna rendered all of them null and void. I myself even threw a tantrum over it. (I am rather fond of Canon Luna now.)
As for Feeling Pinkie Keen, this was an example of popular grifting. There was absolutely nothing wrong with that episode other than that it was a bit bland and slapstick-heavy. The problem is that Tumblr (RIP) saw an opportunity to make it political, and misrepresented the episode as “anti-scientific”, combined with the fact that everybody already hated MLP in S1 because the first wave of bronies could not stop constantly shoving it in the face of every single other fandom.
The actual lesson was “You should accept your friends as they are rather than force them to justify their weird quirks and habits to you”, but if people had ever understood what this show was about, it would never have turned the direction it did, so it’s a moot point.
MMDW was just considered a slip-up on the grounds that Dash’s friends were assholes drastically overreacting to some of the mildest asshole-ness Dash has ever had in the show. It clearly didn’t work, given Dash behaves much worse in future episodes. No significant number of people absolutely despised it, unlike the Tumblr (RIP) campaign against Feeling Pinkie Keen.
By contemporary standards, the high risks they put all of Ponyville in were fine (it was a comedy cartoon with very little drama yet), but by modern standards MMDW is rather uncomfortable and sloppy.

MMDW and Feeling Pinkie Keen seemed to be well intended(as weird as that sounds for MMDW) but misguided and being early episodes kinda makes it easier to forgive them, especially with the writers(at least up to S5) trying to avoid repeating the episode’s mistakes. From S6 onwards though some of the episodes they made felt like they actively wanted to make the worst possible episodes, especially after the leaks, reading how some episodes like Newbie Dash, AJ’s Day Off, or even the fucking Cheerleading episode were supposed to be a lot more pleasant

I really think that Non-Compete Clause is the worst. At least MMDW and FPK have the excuse of being early in the shows run with things not completely established. Non-Compete Clause doesn’t have that and just has nothing really going for it outside of the student six being somewhat good in it.
