MLP is one of those franchises that reuses names like auto companies reuse badges for their car models every new generation.

I’ve said this before, but the most likely scenario is that G5 is a brand new story and universe and even if characters like Starlight glimmer still get added to the show, they will likely have brand new personalities and backstories.

Looking at the concept art itself looks pretty nice, but still I’m not hyped yet.

Somehow I still find it hard to believe MMC was supposed to be the series finale.
 
Reason?  
It would have felt utterly incomplete, especially when the episode that literally aired right before MMC was setting up for a future episode of an event that would take place after MMC. The Equestria Games?  
Not to mention a lot of unanswered questions will be left regarding the lore and characters, leads of the series set up by numerous episodes prior. Chrysalis? What would have happened to her if the series just ended at MMC? What would Discord’s reformation have led to? The origin of the Elements of Harmony would be left unanswered. Starswirl the Bearded and the Equestria past would remain a mystery. The Mane 6’s parents and families would remain unaddressed. Lots of stuff.
 
So a part of me think they TOTALLY had it planned going for more after 3.

Probably. When FiM launched, I don’t think anyone was expecting it to become the moneymaker it became.
 
Speaking of season 3 – there was a trend, generally speaking, for animated shows to last for two full twenty-three-episode seasons and the a thirteen-episode half season before cancellation, and I don’t think it’s too unlikely that that was the original plan with FiM, before the Powers that Be evidently decided it was better to keep it running. This, I think, might explain some aspects of how “Magical Mystery Cure” was written and presented – at the time, there would probably have been a non-zero chance of FiM not getting renewed for a fourth season, but no certainty that it wouldn’t be, either. So, the episode likely ended up in the odd position of having to be written to be a decent finale if no renewal came, but leave enough threads open to lead into a new season if the show was renewed.

G2 Ponies didn’t even last a year.
 
The longevity of a Pony generation depends on the consumer demand and profitability of the toys and media. Instinctively Hasbro would try to have a generation last for a decade at most. But that might not always be feasible, and certain generations might end earlier than another depending on the health of the market. G1 and 3 were split into two halves as G1.5 and G3.5. Kind of surprised Hasbro didn’t take that route and make G4.5 this time around. You’d think seeing the success of G4, they’d try to stretch G4 for a little longer?
 
Does anyone else believe that G4 was originally supposed to end a lot earlier? Having come out of two very unpopular generations prior, G3.5 not even lasted half a decade. Perhaps around the end of season 3 was where they would have started work on G5 if it wasn’t for G4’s unanticipated popularity.

I actually don’t think romance should be necessary in the G5. I’ve watched many years ago Simple ways and I didn’t get into it. In fact, it’s one of the reasons why romance is unnecessary in a show like this.
 
However, if they have to do it, at least the writers have to make it interesting.

Need more romance/comedy theme like that of classic The Love Boat TV series from the 1980s

IDW seems to be doing just fine since there hasn’t been any news of them dropping mlp as a comic series.

Considering they are’nt exactly selling well, maybe not. Mostly due to a bunch of issues IDW has recently and i would imagine some other comic company would be intriqued due to the popularity of mlp which was then unknown,

I have absolutely no reason to believe why Hasbro would think adding Starlight Glimmer as a major character would boost profits; a significant chunk of the fandom has been displeased with her since she became a recurring major character (myself included).  
Besides, Starlight Glimmer becoming a major character in G5 wouldn’t really fit with what Hasbro’s done for other MLP reboots. There is a fair chance she may get a background appearance or something as a callback to G4 though.

will IDW make a G5 ongoing?

If they put Glimmer in, i’m kind of hoping she’s the initially corrupt politician.
 
Actually, what are the odds they may change some names around for G5?

To be fair here I can’t exactly imagine them going too far, at least when it comes to grimdark anyways. Most of it depends on the writers assigned, and I think the show will be made by the same guys as fundamentals of magic short awhile back.
