You shouldn’t give up art because some people don’t like it. If anything, it should inspire you to do better.

I am against downvotes because it can scare away new or younger artists, which could be really good in the future, but they gave up art because of downvotes.

That’s how it works in every dominant discourse. E.g. involving characters into heterosexual shipping is ok just because audience takes it as ambient noise, and, specifically for mlp fandom, F/F ships are also recognized as ambient noise. And suddenly something different is followed by “stop the propaganda”.

They have; public voting (up and down) was how I wanted the site to work to begin with, but the decision wasn’t only mine. Currently it’s not possible to do as there are 5 years of voting that were made under the expectation they’d be kept private. And as some have said, the shitposter factor means some people would strive to be notorious for downvoting as much as possible, much like street taggers.

But couldn’t that bring unneeded drama and shit to members if something they dislike upsets someone? Seriously, if a person wants to dislike something privately and not go to the comments let them. Trying to publicize it will only bring trouble and drama or otherwise make things unpleasant. Let people dislike something without making a big deal out of it.

I imagine some people will take it as a badge of honor to downvote some image they see as “deservin” of it rather then just ignoring it then?

Call me what you want, I’m not reading through this pile. Has anyone brought up making downvotes public yet? If you downvote something, take the damned responsibility for it. Won’t change much for the mods I reckon but seeings as how they aren’t going away, it may at least keep some people from overusing it.
 
Of course, it doesn’t need to be shown upfront as recent faves, a link in the profile would suffice.

A lot of the humanized images that get votebombed are simply not sexy/porn. It’s a show that intentionally made their cast as diverse in their species as possible, with (initially) two of each race of pony. But for humanizations, it’s practically verboten to have anything other that 8-10/10 white girls with maybe some varience in athletic build and breast size, unless it’s porn.

A lot of the dark skinned images are shitly drawn by tumblrinas thinking “social justice” balances out an inability to draw. Though yeah there’s also the palette issues. There are plenty of highly rated images dark skinned characters, so artists need to “git gud” or stick to Tumblr rather than blame icky bronies or whatever (and honestly after the shit tumblr has let fly I think they’ve lost all right to preach to our end of the fandom)

My interests in fim, this fandom and this site have been waning so I find myself late to the party.
 
Who exactly was getting butthurt about the old downvote system? Was it people who actually draw good stuff but receive the odd unfair downvote? Even a masterpiece niche fetish pic is unlikely to get the same kind of score as a generic beautifully draw pic and removing downvotes wouldn’t change that.
 
Is it little kids drawing “awesome” ocs in ms paint? Because honestly if it is they can fucking get over it

I generally don’t use any voting related filtering myself, so I don’t see the issue myself.
 
My main concern with what you offered in your reply is what you mean by changing how voting is displayed. In that I feel it is still important not to hide the downvotes or restrict how many votes there are in likes or dislikes. What do you mean by “possibly some change in how voting is displayed”, and what do you have it mind?

People would have to disable the default score filtering on the site, as well as not use any score related terms in their filters. As well, it’d overall make it difficult or impossible to gauge how good content is based on score, because something “really good” that wasn’t tagged well enough for a few minutes may have 40 downvotes, while something mediocre the OP tagged well will only have 10 downvotes.
 
As byte (and others) have said repeatedly, downvoting won’t be removed now; that doesn’t mean they’re not a problem we need to find solutions to deal with. Some of those are more moderation tools (.ie time taken away from user-facing features), more moderation time, and possibly some change in how voting is displayed. I’ll finally change the thread title to avoid more johny-come-lates going off the title/OP alone.

I think by now most people with niche fetishes are used to having downvotes galore on said images here.  
Doesn’t stop them from appreciating and faving them privately.

I liked the change because, as someone with a niche fetish, I often see good images of that fetish with low/negative scores due to downvotes. It makes it hard for us to search for good images of our kink. I can’t imagine how bad it is for those that like scat.
