Still holding on tightly to this one, friend. Had to take a moment to remind myself that this, in theory, is not what the desktop version will be.
I swear, it’s the most inconsequential things (the appearance of a website vs. something like an impending natural disaster) that can most easily nearly cause some of us a panic attack…
Edit:  Just offhandedly clicked an image and scrolled down to see if it had comments, and ew ew ew ew, round profile pics by default is gross.  Dx
  • And please, please don’t go to the abhorrent circular profile picture concept that everywhere else has gone to. It doesn’t look better than the square version. It never has.

derp, i left the redesign branch running instead of downtiming it, i meant to test if it deploys correctly and to determine what to look at next, i didn’t mean for anyone to see it yet
To note:
  • CSS there is 40-50% complete, a lot is missing
  • HTML isn’t adjusted for some CSS
  • lots of stuff just hasn’t been looked at yet

What you saw is entirely and utterly incomplete and is not representative of what the redesign will look like

I’ll change the branch there to the one with JS bundler changes and then you can tell me whether JS works, since that’s what I wanted feedback on.
upd: beta site now has the stuff I actually want you to look at! navigate here: https://beta.derpibooru.org/

For Princess Celestia’s info: that blue bar is the .media-box__overlay, which has absolute positioning, not being contained; either .media-box or .media-box__header need to contain it, such as via position: relative

Trust me… I sincerely understand.
I saw how completely flat and ugly the Windows 8 UI was compared to Windows 7 and its Aero, and I’ve hung onto Win7 with a deathgrip.
Steam has decided it will nolonger function for me, Firefox has told me I’ve reached general end of lifetime, but I’ll be damned if my taskbar and window borders don’t still look pretty. I’ll get a new rig one day in order to handle modern updates of 3D games again, but I’ll be dubious AF until I see those rumors that Win10 can emulate Aero to some degree actually turn out to be true…
But I have seen enough mobile screenshots to know you guys get the rough end of the stick on a regular basis, and I feel so sorry for you.  v.v  I once came across a ‘tutorial’ on ‘modern mobile site aesthetics’, and it sickened me. Slammed it straight into my ‘what NOT to do’ list.
If I had to guess, it’s in part because of tiring it must be to ACTUALLY get a nice-looking display to render across fifty-two different sets of screen dimensions, DPI differences between devices, and Luna knows what all else. Honestly, it’s the kind of project that makes part of me want to tackle it out of spite, just to prove it can be done - that a mobile site can, in fact, function whilst having a pretty UI that takes up a little of that precious screen real-estate.
You know, with a pretty UI. And not just more ads. (No offense to Derpi; I love their banner ads that show up between the page content and the comment box. <3 )
But seriously, though - way back when, my first big forum experience used a white-and-light-blue combination, and I used the default skin for Derpi for years as well. I use dark mode now, but I still enjoy seeing the normal version of the site on my way by whenever my cookies get wiped and I need to fix my settings again. Trixie Blue, flags high.
…This quickly devolved, my apologies.

That’s because most redesigns these days are downgrades. Dumbed-down flat grayscale mobile UIs with hamburger menus, and essential information/functionality being hidden or removed because “they confuse the users”. Merely announcing a redesign can fill you with dread, because you know what’s coming.
Derpi fortunately hasn’t gone down that road, but I fear that one day it will.

Chrome Version 93.0.4577.107 (Official Build) (64-bit), and can confirm image spoilering is not operating correctly, and that comments- and favorites numbers cannot be seen above any image:

(The image-adding system for comments seems to be completely borked on the normal site for my setup as well, at least when it comes to imgur images, given that the example images in the Detailed Syntax Guide won’t even load, so I hope this actually posts for anypony/everypony else.)
Also, on one hand, the bold (Featured Image, list titles at bottom of page) feels too aggressive. On the other, it feels VERY videogame-y, at least with the all-caps font, for whatever reason, and I’m down for that. Furthermore, I’m using a Chromebook netbook, rather than a pocket device, for perspective on that ‘aggression’.
I wish I could double-check things with my desktop’s Firefox, but I have no current way of connecting it to the internet at the moment.

Tags are all mashed together when editing. There are no discernible boundaries between them.
When viewing a filter, there’s also no spacing between tags, but it’s better than the above. Should use the same style as image pages.
Filters page is ugly, buttons are in a bulleted list rather than horizontal sequence.
Page navigation widget looks thicc and unaligned; the section with page number and down arrow does nothing when hovered over (but it does work on DNP list). On second and further pages, the borders between first, prev and current page sections are lost.
large
The search section below images also has weird layout and spacing. Sort options should be in line with search button, not below. Widgets like the NOT button should have space to breathe; now it looks like “NOTSearch terms”. Search textbox could use more inner spacing too. There’s also the weird empty page-wide rounded rectangle above the search button, but it’s also present on Derpi today, it’s just less noticeable.
large
In forums/comment sections, personal titles look like regular text. It’s confusing.
In posts/comments, quotes lack outlines, so they only differ from regular text by indentation.
On tag guidelines page, tags have vertical inner spacing, but lack horizontal inner spacing and vertical outer spacing.
Profile page layout is messed up, even more so at like 170% zoom. Additionally, the about me section shows HTML markup and not the rendered result.
That’s in Firefox 125.

The top bar search box still isn’t stretched out. It should stretch itself as wide as possible, because there is plenty of room.
Funnily enough it gets very wide in mobile view (e.g. when page is zoomed in), but then it gets its own line, which is annoying.

I miss the show so much
  • A strange blue bar at the top on many pages, as already reported
  • Badge lists are broken everywhere, like Moonlight Bloom reported already reported
  • Small caps titles look a bit jarring
  • I’m not too keen on circular profile images, but maybe that’s just me?
  • Tag “Implied by” lists are always visible, the checkbox does nothing.
  • Tags don’t have the Watch/Spoiler/Hide dropdowns (possibly related to the JS error in the console?)
  • Tag shorthands box (below the tag editor) layout is completely broken.
  • Fancy tag editing is absent. Only the plain editor seems to be available. Perhaps related to the JS error?
  • “Save tags” and “Cancel” buttons below the tag editor are displayed with list bullets.
  • Profile page link list is vertical, not horizontal, and it takes too much space. Perhaps this is the same bug that breaks the tag shorthands box?
  • The profile badge list has too much padding
  • In fact, everything on the profile page seems to have too much padding
  • The tag search box (on the Tags page) and non-fancy tag editors have zero padding
  • Paddings in general seem to be random. Some elements have lots of it, some have none.
  • Generally, all buttons seem to always have CSS transitions enabled. No media queries are used to disable them when the browser is in “reduced motion” mode.
  • The Galleries dropdown (on image pages) is clipped against the image info box, making them unusable
  • The top bar search box still isn’t stretched out. It should stretch itself as wide as possible, because there is plenty of room. Similarly, comment and forum post search boxes are tiny, unpadded and narrow boxes.
  • Comment/forum post blockquotes are displayed without borders and their contents are hard to tell from non-quoted content. They need borders/background colors for visibility.
  • Image comment counts are vertically misaligned compared to the other icons/numbers that are listed above images on list pages. The backgrounds of those statistics bars are also missing, which looks weird if the image is transparent (you can’t tell where the image ends and statistics start).
  • Speaking of backgrounds, various header/footer backgrounds are missing. There’s lots of lines separating areas from each other, which is good, but some backgrounds would also be good.
  • Perhaps there are too many boxes? For example, the list of comments/forum posts in your profile looks inconsistent, as the boxes touch each other, causing double borders to appear between the elements. If everything has to be in boxes, then some padding is needed between them.
  • This error shows up in the console on every page:
Uncaught TypeError: f(...) is null
    ni https://beta.derpibooru.org/js/app-0750e0da38529d32af19a7ad02ff25fd.js?vsn=d:19

app-0750e0da38529d32af19a7ad02ff25fd.js:19:2887
Perhaps some of the breakage is caused by this as it halts JavaScript processing?
Using FF 125.0.3 on Kubuntu (with snaps wiped from the system).
I assume the lack of non-dark themes isn’t permanent. You won’t take Trixie Blue from me without repercussions.

The gallery page on the redesign currently has a random blue bar on top of the site’s header. Navigation is still fortunately possible but definitely not ideal right now.

Additionally, can’t seem to reply to forum messages from the redesign.

Minimum Required Browser is Being Bumped

We recently switched to using Vite as our JS+CSS asset bundling tool, because the tool we were using previously (Webpack) was really slow (4x slower than Vite) and unwieldy (configuring it with every update became more and more hellish). It states that it requires Chrome >= 87 (2020). After looking into it, there is a chance the site would still work on Chrome >= 64 (roughly late 2017 / early 2018). We aim to support ES2020 as our default standard from now on, so we won’t include polyfills for older browsers in case we happen to use the features present in it. We will also not deliberately ruin compatibility without a good reason for it.
If you’d like to check if your browser can display the site correctly with the new JS/CSS assets, navigate to this link: https://beta.derpibooru.org (you might have to copy this URL and paste it in the browser navbar, as our Markdown stuff turns links into their relative equivalents)
We’d like to hear feedback from you about this!

Well, ok, but while I have no idea what it has to do with the dev changes today, I still think if you want to find images with Lauren Faust on them, you can search the tag ‘Lauren Faust’.
If you want to use that to prove some other point, that’s fine, I guess. Whatever works for you. I just don’t know why you’re framing me as being opposed to whatever it is you’re proposing, or why that’s a perception you want to create.
Like, why would anyone give a shit if I thought the palette of the different tag categories was good or bad? How is presenting that as something I care about even useful for you in trying to advocate for your proposed change?
I don’t have anything to say about it. It’s not my site. I’m just a volunteer here.

Also, how necessary is it to stick to a palette of 256 web-safe colors? It’s 2024, not 1996. More importantly, this is a place for images. Those images will use whichever colours they damn well please. I understand that colors should be perceptually distinct, but which part of the rainbow is most squeezed?

Ciaran’s lamentations about running out of distinct web-safe colors notwithstanding, this really means further division of tag categories is warranted.
Tags like “alternate version” and “derpibooru exclusive” could have their own category (let’s call it origin-adjacent), but still keep the same color as the origin tags. If a different color is necessary, they could get a slightly different shade.

FWIW, -source_url:?* was the way to find absence of sources in the past (and more generally, to find absence of content for other string-type fields)
@The Smiling Pony
Ciaran’s lamentations about running out of distinct web-safe colors notwithstanding, this really means further division of tag categories is warranted.
Also, keep in mind that some characters have multiple mutual-implication-enforced tags, or that people use multiple tags for the same oc (until someone notices and posts about it in the tagging forum), and that “oc” and “oc only” count within oc_tag_count. (oc is automatically added whenever someone tags an oc:-prefixed tag, but may be missing for various reasons.)
@JP
That and so many other tags. Don’t get me started. Nevermind also whether you’d tag “oc only” on a picture where the oc has a figurine of a canon character in the background on a shelf, for example, and that you wouldn’t tag “oc only” if there’s an oc and something else that wouldn’t be character-categorized (eg. Optimus Prime).
