I can accept that reaction, when you tried to hide it and still see a thing, but seeing placeholder in place of featured image, when you specifically spoiler it, is what users should expect. I spoiler “animated” because of traffic, I definitely don’t want to rid off animated featured completely.

Yes, but that old behavior caused another old behavior where a bunch of people behaved poorly.
 
Namely, they’d go on the featured image and throw a hissy fit that there’s a notice that the featured image contains a tag they filter.

In my opinion it’s a really strange behavior, and I’m not sure, if this was intended to work that way.
 
Will Featured Image Come back in Few Day?
If the next image won’t also be affected by your filter, then yeah, it will, no worries.
