Damn page cutoff. Anyway…
@ILoveMyoozik
I just… thought Muse was beyond this. This whole middle-of-the-road, electropop BS that has been taking over the rock world. Hell, there’s so much electronics in the album that I’m half convinced that Chris and Dom didn’t even play on the album, which is criminal since they are both amazing musicians. I bet they’re bored off their asses whenever they have to play songs from this album live.
How can I describe Simulation Theory? It sounds like Muse took the worst elements of pop and the worst elements of modern rock and blended them together in an album. I’m pretty alone on this stance, but I dare say that rock’s big downfall has come about because of the genre’s recent heavy resistance to “pop” sensibilities, which include catchy melodies, simpler song structures, and big, killer hooks. But this album doesn’t have any of those, as I left the album not being able to remember any of the melodies or lyrics of the songs that were on it. Hell, on one of the songs, the beat basically drowned out Matt’s singing voice during the verses. Pretty bad…
Don’t be a snark.

Well, what can you do?

I mean, I get that you’re a huge fan of them and all that, but mediocre to bad albums like that is just expected out of a band, no matter how good they are. As I’ve said countless times before, bands and artists change with the times and try their hand at whatever current sound is popular at the moment to either cash in, or experiment with it. Am I saying that this was a smart move for the band to try their hand at the electropop alternative sound? That’s up to you to decide. What I am saying is that it probably shouldn’t be surprising that they went to this direction. But what do I know? Maybe this is me offering an outsider’s perspective since I don’t consider myself a hardcore fan of them.

Though I am surprised you didn’t have any comment about this:

I saw that and it’s fine, your anger got the best of you.

But if you insist then fine. Rock has been in a decline from the mainstream since the early 2010’s and this was when the genre still had the “rock” sound to it. This electropop, alternative sound may be the hot thing right now, but rest assured that it will go away and it will change again in the next few years as it’s always been. I consider that more alternative than rock though.

And the thing you said about it having pop sensibilities, I remember stadium/arena rock being condemned for those exact criticisms give or take.

I dont think I have much reason to pick one over the other with Hardcore Punk or Post-Punk. I think it would all just depend on the band and on top of that its not very comparable.

That being said Gems of Masochism by Antioch Arrow is an amazing album that combines Emocore with Gothy Post-Punk. Cant think of very many other Post-Punk/Hardcore bands except maybe some early Post-Hardcore since it evolved from both scenes in the 80s.

Oh, trust me, I still see a lot of rock and metal condemned for that. Halestorm is easily one of the best modern metal bands, not just because of Lzzy Hale’s* killer metal scream, but because nearly every song is a fucking earworm. But you know what that gets them among “trve metal” fans? Scorn.

I do kind of hate that elitist stance that a lot of rock fans take, by the way. As if having “pop” elements of any sort automatically makes a band bad, and bands that follow that structure are hated for being too mainstream. That’s part of why a good majority of modern metal and rock doesn’t appeal to me: the lack of any sort of hook, of anything memorable. Like, sure, the instrumentation may be fast, but if all you’re doing is showing off the fact that you can speed-pick your entire solo without a melody, then congratulations, you can do that, but everyone will immediately forget about it afterwards. Same goes with vocal lines and drum beats.

Meshuggah never used melodies very often and use odd rhythms way more yet I can remember most of their stuff I listen to.

I can say though I hate modern Tech Death for the reason of it being so squeaky clean on the production that theres no weight to anything going on in anything so its basically just speedy technical riffs.

Actually, it was written. If it wasn’t, then the song wouldn’t have existed. It was written back in the 1800’s as an old folk song while the US was starting to become more industrious. The fact of the matter is that two Swedish EDM producers took the song, got some band to sing it, and set it under a Eurodance beat.
